OMG. I am reading Building a Reading Life by Lucy Calkins. The Teacher's College reading/writing program has been bought wholeheartedly by my district. Here is what I just read.

"If a child's (reading) pace has slowed...observe...checking if there are any noticeable reading behaviors that might be slowing the child down. Does the child move her lips while reading, move her head from side to side, point at words as she reads, use a bookmark to hold her place as she reads, or read aloud to herself? If ...so...you will want to intervene. Tell the child that he or she has graduated and no longer needs to do those behaviors."

Wow. I wish I had known years ago that all it takes to fix a reading issue is to tell the child to stop needing supports.
