A New Report Finds More Americans Will Owe When They File Their 2018 Taxes

According to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, more Americans will be writing checks to the IRS when they file their 2018 taxes in April due to recent changes to the tax law. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act took effect in January 2018 and made sweeping changes to the Internal Revenue Code. Just how many Americans are under-withholding from their paycheck? Based on simulations run by the Treasury Department, approximately 30 million Americans are not having enough withheld. In fact, only 6 percent of Americans were found to have the right amount withheld from their paycheck. The IRS recommends everyone perform a paycheck checkup to ensure proper withholding. Find out how to use the IRS’ online withholding calculator to perform a paycheck checkup on our blog: https://kcpeo.com/2vyAUOE

Why the IRS Recommended Paycheck Checkup is Even More Important for Seasonal Workers

As part of our Ask the Payroll Expert series, we’ve been covering the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and its impact on taxpayers’ federal and state withholding amounts. The IRS has recommended everyone perform a paycheck checkup; however, some groups of people are more likely to be affected by the tax code changes than others. One of these groups are seasonal, part-time and temporary workers. Summer through the month of December marks the busy time of year for seasonal workers. In fact, in 2016, an extra 570,000 workers were hired by retailers for the holiday season. Find out why these workers should perform a paycheck checkup as soon as possible in our new Ask the Payroll Expert blog featuring Axcet HR Solutions Director of Payroll Administration Jo McClure: https://kcpeo.com/2KnvoUw

IRS Provides Tips to Taxpayers to Help Prevent Scams

There’s no one season for scammers - they are active year-round. But by knowing how the IRS contacts taxpayers, you can help avoid being a victim. The IRS will send letters via the United States Postal Service, call by phone and make unannounced visits to the home or place of business. Always ask for identification. An IRS representative will always be able to provide two forms of official credentials. On the other hand, the IRS does not contact taxpayers via text messaging, social media or through email. The Cost of a Bad Hire

A National Business Research Institute survey found 66 percent of business owners had experienced the negative effects of a bad hire. But what is a bad hire and how much does it cost? A bad hire may produce low quality work, regularly miss deadlines, have poor attendance and a negative attitude that brings down office morale. They often don’t work well with others and may cause customers to complain or result in lost business. Most companies make bad hires because they need to quickly fill a position, but these bad hires aren’t helpful. In fact, the Department of Labor (DOL) estimates they cost organizations a minimum of 30 percent of the employee’s first year earnings. Unfortunately, small business owners typically learn this the hard way. However, by knowing and utilizing interview best practices, business owners can better identify the best candidate for the position. Read our free report detailing the 16 best interview practices now: https://kcpeo.com/2Lqsrb6
