Registration is now open for ALFA members to attend the ALFA 2013 Advocacy Fly-In. The two-day event will take place September 17-18, 2013 in Washington, DC. (Attached- view footage from ALFA's 2010 Fly-In to get an inside look at this important event.)

As the senior living business continues to grow and thrive, we will inherently undergo increasing scrutiny by the media, by advocates and by well-meaning officials at both the federal and state level.  Thus, it is vital that lawmakers, policymakers, regulators and other federal and state officials understand what the senior living business is all about, what we do and what we don’t do, why senior living is such an extraordinarily popular option among seniors and their families—and why it is important to continue to strengthen the regulations governing those who serve seniors in each of the 50 states.  You can help carry this message directly to your elected U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives by attending and participating in our ALFA 2013 Advocacy Fly-In.

Will You Help Advocate On Behalf of Seniors? Attend The ALFA 2013 Advocacy Fly-In And Tell Washington That We Are Strong In The States. http://alfa.org/flyin.

The great number of 2014 Hero Award nominees has been winnowed down to 15.  All 15 are superbly qualified to receive this prestigious award and this year, to determine the finalists, ALFA has put this out for a vote.  Five will be recognized at the ALFA Conference and Expo this May—and yes—we will do a video profile of each of the five!

Whereas last year we had former First Lady Laura Bush helping in the effort to celebrate employees with heart, this year we will have Captain Mark Kelly (astronaut) and his wife Gabrielle Gifford (former Congresswoman) to do the same.

Please take a moment to vote and encourage nominations from your colleagues.  Follow the links below to see the 15.

Vote via the conference website: http://alfa.org/herovoteweb
Vote on Facebook: http://alfa.org/herovotefb

Voting is open through February 26, 2014.

If you followed ALFA's Senior Living Art Showcase (http://alfa.org/art), you may also be interested in this lovely story of how one artist is sharing her craft to bring peace and beauty into the healthcare setting.

Alison Sigethy, a local resident of Alexandria (down the road from ALFA), creates Sea Core Bubbler Tubes, featured in the video below.

Sigethy's 81-year-old mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease. "She is frequently lost in a world of her own," says her daughter. "But she becomes a different person when she's around the Sea Core. She lights up and becomes much more animated when she's watching the bubbles in the sculpture. She notices the way it looks at different times of day, and she moves around the room to watch it from different angles. It's amazing."

"Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. It speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. It transcends our ordinary lives and lets us imagine what is possible." - Richard Kamler

How has art impacted the residents at your communities?

Recently ALFA visited Emeritus Senior Living for an art party with the residents. Seniors created artwork that embodied the theme, Celebrating the Beauty of Life, for the ALFA art showcase.

Here Mary Ellen paints a sunrise to capture the theme explaining that each new day represents a chance to recognize beauty in the world.

“Energy is not the cost of doing business. It’s not overhead. It can be controlled, and it does bring value to the corporate bottom line. To do energy management right, you need to make it a bona fide program within the organization. Get your energy management plan in writing and establish financial and other goals. As someone who has found immense value in EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, I have to say ‘join it.’ Use their free tools. Set yearly targets...” - Richard Beam, Director of Energy Management Services, Providence Health & Services.
