For our first trip to D.C. we stayed at The Donovan, it has a very modern and fancy lounge area when you enter. When you walk in the room there is a very interesting design with a circular shower just off to the side. This was great for my wife and I, but not something you would want to book with your buddy. The room was very comfortable and pretty close to the public transit that we would use everyday. The rooftop pool was pretty nice and just about every night there was some kind of party or gathering up there with drinks and music.

The lobby was nice. They do a wine hour which was funny. Wine was bad but free and everybody came out. If the heat in the room doesn't work push the "start" button REALLY fast for a few seconds and it'll fire right up. Hot water takes a while to get going but then it runs strong. We had the premier king suite. There was a mystery wet spot in front of the bathroom so we just covered it up with a towel. The floor to ceiling windows were awesome. There is no vent in the bathroom and you can't open windows... not sure where all the humidity is supposed to go. We had to run the heat or the ac all the time or else everything felt damp. It is true what the other review said about the shower... If someone uses the bathroom light at night the cocoon shower glows like a beacon of hope in a dark and dismal land. It could serve as the room's main light source. Not ideal if people are getting up at different times or if you need to use the light at night because you may disturb the other person in the room. My girlfriend wants me to mention that there was no sound proofing in the bathroom and all noises made in there are severely amplified. Maybe due to the shape of the cocoon shower? Some kind of resonance issue? We asked for early check in but our room type wasn't available. They did hold our luggage for us and gave us vouchers for some free drinks at the bar upstairs. The people on staff were nice and brought us extra towels and sent someone to show us the "heat trick". I don't know if I would stay here again; I was expecting something a little nicer.

I wouldn't stay again, there were some nice things about the place and most of the people that worked there were nice but I would rather spend more for better standards. I booked via 3rd party, I was informed more then once that when you book this way certain things are not guaranteed, like the room that I paid for. They put me in small room with a queen when I asked for a king, it was eventually sorted out but I don't really care to hear about internal issues between them and their affiliates. There was dried blood (not a lot but still) and pubic hair on the wash clothes and towels. I would ask for extra wash clothes to account for this and because I had to use one to wipe dust off the furniture. The following day after the room was cleaned all the wash clothes were replaced with hand towels, the next day all the hand towels were gone and I had extra regular towels. I asked for morning room service and it was never received, I called down to cancel. They also charged me an extra 500-600 when I left on another card, they agreed to refund it. Most of the people there were nice but I can't recommend.

Location great and the rates are affordable. Rooms weren't very large, but decent for a weekend get away to the City. Only real issue was the water from the bathroom sink was very cloudy.

Modern is not my taste, but this tasteful, welcoming hotel is centrally located, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. At check-in I received a Coupon card for $10.00 credit at the bar or from the mini bar in my room. Arrived late from SF but the restaurant was still open. Food was great. Drink was even better.

This is a gorgeous hotel, with exceptional customer service. The restaurant, Zentan, is gorgeous, and offered great food, service, and a beautiful atmosphere. My only complaints are: I requested early check-in, as a Kimpton preferred member, but, the room was not ready in time. I had to wait about 30 minutes before I was able to check in. Also, since the hotel is on the corner of a traffic circle, it can be very confusing to find, via GPS. There were also a lot of cars blocking the pull-in/check-in/valet area, but, I guess this is to be expected during peak hours of check-in/check-out at a trendy, boutique hotel in DC. The elevators are secured by key card access only as well, so please be aware of that. Other than that, I had a very enjoyable stay, and was a little bit sad that I was only able to stay for one night. I also was not able to take advantage of the rooftop deck and pool, which I am sure is just beautiful!!!

I live locally but have had the distinct pleasure of staying at Donovan House twice in the last couple years. The rooms can be small but are extremely stylish, comfortable, and modern. The staff are welcoming and friendly, the beds extremely comfortable! However, the very best thing about Donovan House is actually the rooftop deck, where guests of the hotel (or anyone else!) can get reasonably priced drinks and stellar views of the city! The happy hour drink specials include beer, wine and delicious $5 cocktails, which are extremely well-priced for the venue! I especially love to visit DH right when the sun is setting: the rooftop is alight with lanterns, and the whole place has fantastically trendy but low-key vibe. It's really just perfect.

Great hotel, very attentive staff, very comfortable rooms, good location. However, they need to redesign their showers. They are VERY easy to slip in and there is nothing at all to hold onto. And the spray is adjustable -- by anyone who is 5'6" or taller.
Response from the owner - a year ago
Hi Marcia, Thanks for your Google Review. Seems like a very positive stay, minus the shower situation. I'll be sure to look into this. Slippery = Not good. Cheers, Abe Abe Liao Assistant General Manager
