The Milky Way over Pemaquid Point, Maine. Again. Think I like this comp more than the other one, but it's close. Been working on my night processing. A lot of Milky Way images are too heavyhanded on the contrast and clarity, in my opinion (I myself am guilty of this). Been trying a more subtle approach that I think makes it feel a little more natural. Also wish I had gotten a better exposure of the beacon with some killer light bursts. Gives me an excuse to get up here and try again at some point, I suppose.

Additionally, I have a gigantic backlog of images to work on, so I'll have some more variety up at some point soon, hopefully.

What does one do when Saturday plans fizzle out at the last minute? Why, drive three hours after work on Friday to do some night shooting of course. The last few times I have thought about shooting I decided to ... not do it, for whatever stupid reason. So when I got in from work I decided what the hell, hastily packed a bag and some camping gear and hit the road, heading for Pemaquid Point, Maine. I've been wanting to revisit this spot for some time; the last shots I have from here are terribly out of focus, so here we are. This was taken at about 1:00am.

Passo Gardena is a high mountain pass — elevation: 7008 feet — in the Italian Dolomites, connecting Sëlva in the Val Gardena on the west side with Corvara in the Val Badia. The mountains here are part of the Sella group. I had done some scouting here earlier in the afternoon and couldn't really decide what I wanted for a foreground: big sheets of snow still leftover, or rare patches of flowers that were beginning to finally bloom; I obviously decided to go with the latter. Also went back and forth about cloning out the car down there (my rental!), but thought it gave a decent sense of scale here, so I kept it. Might wind up going back and axing it, though.

Wanted to stick around to shoot some stars after nightfall, but temperatures quickly dropped below freezing — my hands and feet were numb at the end of this shoot — and I was sadly not equipped to spend hours out in that kind of weather. Ah well.

Sunset illuminating the peaks of the Odle mountain range in the Dolomites. Taken from the small village of Santa Maddalena, part of the municipality of Villnoß, in South Tyrol, northern Italy. I've seen this spot in photos before, but it didn't really prepare me for just how jawdroppingly pretty it was seen with my own eyes. Pure magic.

Burning sky as viewed between two interesting boulders I found while hiking around our campsite at White House Campground in Southern Utah. Not too far from Kanab, and a stone's throw from the Toadstools. +Brian Matiash and +Moe Chen took off in the other direction and found some way cool stuff of their own. I thought the lines and textures of the rock was just too cool here, so I kind of made that the priority, with the sunset just passing by in between to say hello.

In other news, I'm off to Europe in a few hours. I'll be checking some stuff out in the Bavarian Alps and the Italian Dolomites, with a stop in Austria if the weather cooperates, then relaxing with a maß of beer in hand for the remainder of the trip in Munich. Prost!

Went sunrise shooting this weekend, but didn't come away with anything useful, so here's an archive shot. Another from the Grand Canyon, the sunrise as seen toward the opposite direction of the last one I posted from here. Pretty rad warmth throughout the sky that morning. I'm missing the southwest.

South of the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point, Maine, is some of the coolest coastal rock in New England. Difficult but fun trying to find a good section to lead into the stars.

American friends, enjoy the 4th! Everyone else, enjoy the weekend.

Santa Cristina Santa Cristina Gherdëina is a small municipality in South Tyrol, Northern Italy. I stayed here for a couple of nights on my recent trip and my, oh my, was it beautiful. This is an afternoon panoramic view facing north, taken while I was just taking a drive through the town, taking in views of the mountains. Not a typical sunset/sunrise shot that I enjoy — more of a postcard shot — but a view that I adored, so I decided to share.

Let's take it back to the desert for a moment. Back in February in Lost Dutchman State Park with +Moe Chen and +Brian Matiash. Behind me are the famed Superstition Mountains, but the real show was sunset, which seemed to the theme for that trip. This area is a bit chaotic and tough to shoot but I found this rad cholla to create some foreground.

Alpenglow on the Karwendel range of the Bavarian Alps as viewed from a hill in the village of Gerold, Germany, 90 minutes or so south of Munich. One of the spots that was a must-see in Germany for me. Sure was nice to see this unfold.

So I just got back from nine days in Bavarian Germany, Austria and northern Italy. Among other things, I can say hands down that it is one of the prettiest corners of the planet that I have seen. Unfortunately, however, I was plagued by either terrible rainy weather the first few days, or nothing but clear skies afterwards, save for one evening. Despite the not-the-best-for-epic-photography conditions, it was without a doubt a highlight of my traveling life and not something I will soon forget, and hopefully I'll have a few shots to post, regardless of non-epicness. I do think I got a few decent 'postcard' shots.

This was taken on the only dry evening for the few few days in Berchtesgadener Land, Germany. The lake is called Hintersee, and lies just west of the small town of Ramsau bei Berchestgaden.

Lastly (sorry this is so long), I'd love to hear any opinions on the color here. I really need to calibrate my monitors; this originally looked off on there, like it was more of a 'green-blue hour', but it looks good on my phone, so I kind of tried to produce something in between to put my mind at ease. Thoughts?

The forecast called for clear skies all night on Friday with a moonset around 11pm. The latter probably wouldn't have mattered much as it was a 14% waxing crescent, but I timed my arrival at Marginal Way for the moonset regardless — perfect timing to catch the Milky Way rising over the Atlantic. Given the infrequency of these kinds of shoots for me, there's still quite the learning curve, but the main thing I took away here: composing a seascape in pitch darkness is really difficult. Next time I'll arrive before sundown to scout and then just wait for the galaxies to join me.
