App update - Google Calendar

At last! Google have now pushed the view mode so you can change from Day, 3 Day, Week and Month to the navigation bar. Oddly refresh has been left where it is to the drop down menu on the right.

The ability to view what's going on in any given month is a huge improvement to Google Calendar too. Don't forget that if you use SMS as a delivery method for notifications Google are pulling the plug on that next month.

The latest update is available over on Google Play now.

*A very handy feature* Touch to search is rolling out and as you can see when you select text when using Google Chrome you can search on that particular subject without leaving the page you're on.

Noticed it only a few moments ago on my Nexus 6. When it firsts comes available you'll be able to turn it off via settings.

Personally I reckon it's going to be handy.

Real-time transit navigation Google Maps gets better and better. Open it up and have a look at getting from one place to another by train and not only will you get a timetable but info on what train company and platform you need to be on and where the train stops on the way.

In most cases there'll also be a link to buy a ticket from the relevant train, bus or coach company.

Google are now adding real-time navigation which sees journeys arranged and summarised in the app so you'll not only see how long you will have to wait but what other options are available.

Google work with over a 100 transport companies and as of today a further 25 are being added in six new places including here in the UK. Other countries include the Netherlands, Budapest, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle.

The new update will see live arrivals for buses, metros and subway systems with alerts for any delays.

Google Maps is simply amazing at what it can do and it's free of charge to use and chosen by millions of people as their go to mapping service. Isn't freedom of choice amazing +European Commission .

Galaxy S6 on Vodafone Carphone Warehouse have an impressive deal on the Samsung Galaxy S6 when connected to Vodafone.

With a monthly cost of £39.99 and an upfront cost of £29.99 you get unlimited calls and texts plus 6GB of data. This will usually incur an upfront cost of £79.99 but the offer code SMARTSAVE50 sees it knocked down.

Connecting to Vodafone also sees you get three months of unlimited data through their Data Test Drive scheme that allows you to use as much data as you like at no extra cost. Keep in mind though that you'll need to pay if you think the data in your plan isn't enough.

Take a look here - http://goo.gl/62o90Q

I reckon 6GB should be fine shouldn't it?

No more SMS alerts from Google Calender As of June 27th Google will be pulling the plug on SMS notifications. It may well be of use to a  select few who have a dumb phone but Google might just be looking at the cost incurred.

Can't say i've used the SMS service myself,. Here's the word from Google:

*Important: SMS notifications not available after June 27th*

Starting on June 27th, 2015, SMS notifications from Google Calendar will no longer be sent. SMS notifications launched before smartphones were available. Now, in a world with smartphones and notifications, you can get richer, more reliable experiences on your mobile device, even offline.
To receive notifications on your smartphone, you can use the calendar app that came with your device, or install Google Calendar for Android or iPhone. Learn more about notifications.
Note: This change will not affect Google Apps for Work, Education and Government customers.

App update - Netflix

A new feature rolling out to Android devices is the ability to let apps sign in with s login details that you've signed in with on Chrome or your Android phone and tablet.

The new Smart Locks Password feature is rolling out to Android devices now and Netflix is one of the first apps to take advantage of the feature.

You'll need to be signed in to your Google account for it work and will be particularly handy if you get a new device.

Android needs a hero Didn't HTC make one of those way back when? According to all the numbers that have been crunched by Kantar Worldpanel that is what Android needs to plug an ever so small drop in market share.

Compared to 58.2 percent in April 2014 Android sits on 54.2 percent this year which is only a very small drop but when we look at the numbers for Apple and Microsoft it still has them on the top and I bet the +European Commission hate it.

Android also saw a drop in first-time smartphone buyers to 15.1 percent from 21.8 percent in 2014 with the likes of the HTC M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 failing to impress.

Thanks to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Apple have seen a jump from 30.2 to 35.8 percent in sales which isn't too shabby so no doubt their people will also be happy to see Microsoft claiming just 9 percent of sales so far this year.

As for BlackBerry they have seen a drop from from 1.6 percent last year to a very poor 0.7 percent this year. They need more than a hero phone to bring their sales back to where they were.

As for this hero Android phone could the LG G4 help push up some sales for the Korean giant and the Android numbers?

All this numbers are based on you choosing your device. Something that we do on an informed basis.

More info on the number crunching via the link below.

Free movie rental from Google Play If you own a Chromecast you could be in for another free movie rental. Power up your WiFi and Chromecast and hit the 'Check for Offers' option found in the settings menu of your Chromecast.

You may notice that when you are prompted to visit Google Play the selection of movies have their usual price quoted. Simply choose your movie and at checkout the offer will be applied rounding it down to zero.

If you have more than one Chromecasts then you'll be able to get more than one movie rental for free. The offer will also apply to those with a Nexus Player.

App update - Sky+

A brilliant app for seeing what's on the TV even if you aren't a Sky customer. Sky do show what app development is all about with this app and a real pity they don't do the same with their other Android apps.

With today's update Sky have included some great performance updates along with giving some bugs a good old seeing to.

If you're logged in before the update you may need to logon after.

Content Ratings on Google Play You may have seen content ratings appearing against apps on Google Play that should help parents or guardians decide what content to download to devices that belong to sensitive eyes and ears.

Dead Trigger 2 has a PEGI 12 rating and advises that the game contains moderate violence and horror. Peppa Pig on the other hand has a PEGI 3 rating which tells you that the content of apps wit this rating is considered suitable for all age groups.

The link below takes you to a support page where each country or region has a drop down menu to explain how the ratings work there. In South Korea for example a 3 rating doesn't necessarily mean an app is designed for children.

It's down to what you think is appropriate for your children to have on their devices so these ratings are there as guidelines only. The ratings also advise you if you need to be worried about money being spent. YouTube advises Parental Guidance as content can be purchased.

The /"Read more" section on an app's details page tells more about the app's interactive features. This will advise you it it has the ability to share a location and if it can share information with a third party app.

More can be found here - https://goo.gl/qSGE4l - and Orange Is The New App is a good example of an app that would probably make you think twice about downloading to your child's device.

Android news for the UK, all things Android in the UK
Introduction
UK based Android blog hoping to bring all the news for Android users here in the UK. You won't find us on a website, after a trial with Google + we have decided to use what has to be a more fun, interactive and easier way to post. Most of my 'blogging' will be done using nothing more than a Nexus 7 3G tablet, great for posting on the go and takes full advantage of all the services Google has to offer. I may also use the super Nexus 4 to add content,
