Wow that was pretty nice! I really enjoyed the "low tech" approach but was a bit disappointed you didn't push it further and talk about arithmetic coding or asymmetric numeral systems (would also have been an opportunity to tell what patents did to this field, for instance Deflate did not thrive only thanks to its technical superiority but also because LZW had been patented –PNG vs. GIF and gzip vs. compress–).
One missing aspect is related to complexity and resource gobbling (memory, CPU cycles), what's the impact of gathering statistics first in Huffman compared to an adaptive arithmetic encoding, what if buffering is not an option, how do these algorithms fare compared to each others, is the resulting size the only metric, why is PPMD dog slow compared to LZ4, who's on the compressed size/encoding time Pareto frontier???? Episode 4?
