Does Advertising Really Work?
From CEOs, CFOs and directors, the question question, "do ads really work" is constantly posed. And for years, marketers have had to justify and defend their adverting budgets, often without factual data.

The +MENGonline DFW Chapter set out to tackle this question in its recent March 2015 meeting. Former CMO of Frito Lay, Dwight Riskey presented the results of a truly enlightening study that he conducted. Keeping variables in check, he created an experiment that spanned multiple years testing the effectiveness of TV adverting.

The attendees were also invited to share their thoughts by watching 15 different ads and guess which ones were effective (increased sales) and which ones didn’t. Need-less-to-say, the batting average of the group was not extremely high!

The study did provide factual evidence that TV ads have a positive correlation on sales.  However, not all ads worked. So, beside proving ads have an impact, the study provided insights to help produce effective ads.

Key Learnings:
1. Have something “meaningful” to say -- newsworthy, relevant
2. Be dramatic - new works (whatever in the minds of the consumer)
3. Small brands work
4. Quick impact - ads that will work, will deliver within a quarter
5. Spread ads more efficient and effective
6. Effective ads have residual effects
7. Humor or celebrities – can work, or not be needed

A Fun Evening Reviewing Ads that Did and Didn't Work with +MENGonline MENGDFW Chapter

For 5 years in the mid 90’s, Dwight Riskey led an effort in which Frito-Lay tested all of its television advertising experimentally in a split-panel, advertising vs. no-advertising experiment.  Discover the advertising principles derived from this ingenious experiment, an approach no longer even possible in today’s world of market research.  Test your skills at predicting which of these historical ads actually drove purchase increases among advertised households.

Dwight casually mentioned that he had even more ad examples that he could share— but it might be more appropriate to view them with a glass of wine in hand. Well MENGDFW has taken him up on his offer. The program, which is described below, also kindly, includes hosting at the Strope Insights Offices accompanied with wine and hors d'oeuvres.

Contest to Guess the Best and Worst
We will also hold a contest and the winner, will not only have bragging rights, but also will leave with a prize—a nice bottle of wine.

Key takeaways:
1.  Principles of effective advertising
2.  Remember some classic and not so classic Frito-Lay ads
3.  Network in an intimate environment with peers over wine

Date and Time
Join the Dallas MENG Chapter (MENGDFW) on March 25, 2015. Along with the fun interaction of evaluating ads, your ticket will include wine and Hors D'oeuvres.  Cost is $20 for members and $30 for guests.
