We also have a YouTube channel.  Still in its infancy but we hope to build on this, giving tips to engineers about operation and maintenance.  Here is a taster:

Steve Harper had been at Newcastle United well over 10 years and in fact was 20 years and for his “testimonial” had created the Steve Harper Charity match.

The match at St James’s Park was staged to celebrate his career.

The teams included Newcastle legends Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and David Ginola and AC Milan old-timers Paolo Maldini, Christian Vieri , Franco Baresi and Paolo Di Canio.

The match attracted over 50,000 with Milan winning on penalties. The trophy was sponsored by Cool Designs and presented by Darrel Birkett of Cool Designs Ltd and David Dunn of Toshiba Air Conditioning.

The amount raised by Steve Harper was  £327,000 with the monies being donated to the Newcastle United Foundation, Great North Children’s Hospital and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and through them the Alan Shearer Foundation, the Toma Fund, and the Clarke Lister Brain Haemorrhage Foundation.

Sales may be rising but events took a distinct dive at our Sunderland Office recently.

In our continued charity fund-raising efforts, MD Darrel Birkett and Regional Sales Manager Chris Oldroyd undertook a tandem skydive and raised £855 for The Newcastle Chronicle’s Sunshine Fund, which provides specialised equipment to children with disabilities in the North East of England.

Commenting on the dive Darrel, pictured bottom with a trainer from the Peterlee Parachute Centre explained, “We flew up to around 12,000ft, jumped out and accelerated to 120mph.  Straight down!  It was exhilarating! the first 6,000ft which is over in just under a minute was breathtaking and would certainly recommended it!  The next six thousand feet under canopy is more relaxing as you chat and come gently back down to earth.

Celia Dickinson of Toshiba Air Conditioning presents CDL’s Darrel Birkett with an award to mark 10 years as a Toshiba distributor

With its headquarters in Sunderland, the company also has offices in Warrington, Glasgow and the most recently opened addition in Cannock, Staffs.

Future plans include the creation of a third training centre in Glasgow and a roll-out this year of Toshiba’s expanded training programme covering the fundamentals of air conditioning, design, installation and commissioning.

It will be taking on additional staff to help support expansion, including the appointment of an additional project engineer. There are also plans to expand its recently launched website, to further improve the provision of technical and product information to customers.

“It has always been our intention to grow responsibly,” explained md Darrel Birkett. “This means delivering on our commitments on training and the environment and ensuring, as far as possible, that we only supply bona fide installers who will do a good job and act responsibly. Our emphasis on training is designed to achieve the same thing, by ensuring installations are carried out to the highest standards.”

Cool Designs Ltd, the specialist air conditioning supplier, has won the top accolade in the ACR News Awards 2014, being crowned Distributor of the Year.

The coveted trophy was presented to Darrel Birkett, CDL’s founder and managing director, by celebrity Lenny Henry at the gala awards finals, held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

The judges praised CDL’s vision and commitment in becoming the first carbon neutral air conditioning supplier in the UK. They also commended the company for combining outstanding charity and community work with commercial success.

CDL has been the recipient of the top distributor award now on a number of occasions. Darrel Birkett said: “It is obviously very pleasing to once again receive recognition by one’s peers in the industry. I am also delighted that our success is not just a flash in the pan, but reflects a winning formula that we have evolved and built into the company’s approach over a number of years.

“It is based on a lot of passion, creativity and hard work on the part of the CDL team. It also reflects the fantastic support we receive from our key manufacturers such as Toshiba.”

The distributor was also singled out for its dedication to the cause of training, in which it has invested significantly in recent years. The company, which recently celebrated 10 years as a Toshiba distributor, has capacity to train up to 400 engineers each year.

The company operates a highly successful and growing video tutorial library via You Tube, available with open-access for engineers.

Darrel added: “We believe commercial success can go hand-in-hand with environmental concern and community involvement. Indeed, I believe it is not only desirable but essential to act responsibly and do the right thing. The growth of CDL in recent years proves that this approach can create a virtuous circle.

“However, we will not be resting on our laurels. We have plans in hand to further grow the company in the future, and build on the strong foundation we have established.”
