Personal message from Sogyal Rinpoche about the passing of Shamar Rinpoche:
I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Shamar Rinpoche, Mipham Chökyi Lödro. Rinpoche was recognized by his uncle the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa as the 14th Shamarpa, one of the most prominent lineage holders of the Karma Kagyü tradition, second only to the Karmapa himself. As one of the main disciples of His Holiness the Karmapa, he received the entire cycle of the Kagyü teachings from him and remained with him until his death in 1981.
Not only do Shamar Rinpoche and I share the same bloodline, but he was also very close to our family, especially my mother Mayum-la Tsering Wangmo, whom he considered to be one of his closest relatives.
Just a few weeks ago on the 19th of May, Rinpoche made a special effort to visit her here at our home in Lerab Ling in the south of France. Rinpoche also visited us in 2012 and we felt a very strong connection with him. Since his passing, I have been in touch with his brother Jigme Rinpoche.
I, along with the entire Rigpa Sangha, offer our deepest heartfelt prayers for Rinpoche, his family and all his many students around the world. We pray that he returns swiftly to this world of ours and that his vast aspirations to bring the Buddhadharma to as many sentient beings as possible continue to be fulfilled.
Sogyal Rinpoche, 12 June 2014,
Lerab Ling, France
