Israeli Independence Day! - April 23, 2015

The State of Israel will be celebrating its 67th birthday on Thursday, April 23.  Most people remember the date of May 14th 1948 as being the birth of the State of Israel which is correct, however, since Israel follows the Hebrew calendar regarding holidays and special days the date on the Gregorian calendar changes from year to year.

Parashat vaYera. “Is anything too wonderful for God”?
We sometimes tend to understand this verse to say that there is nothing too difficult for God. However, the word yipale carries far more meaning than that. Actually it says that there is no miracle that God cannot do. That being the case, we naturally ask, What is a pele (miracle, wonder)?
Shabbat Shalom!

Parashat Lech Lecha. Shabbat Shalom!

"We read that a smoking fire pot passes between the cut pieces. This is the presence of God himself (just as God walked with Israel through the desert in a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire). What this means is that God is in fact saying that he knows that Abraham and his seed will not keep the covenant, and he himself is ready to take on himself their punishment and pay the price for breaking the covenant. He is ready to give himself, to die on behalf of Abraham and his seed. So we see here a revelation of the gospel that will later be fulfilled in the Messiah. God himself will pay the price for us with his own life."

Tonight Yom Kippur starts. The yearly Day of Atonement. It was on this day once a year that the Priest would enter the Holy of Holies to atone for the people's sins. Recommended readings in the NT are: Romans 3:21-26, 2 Corinthians 5:10-21 and Hebrews 10:1-18

Parashat Nitsavim - vaYelech. The good Torah that we received taught us that we cannot satisfy God with our works. God chose Israel and promised that he would never forsake us. Jesus the Messiah—God, who took on himself the form of a servant and became a man—came to the world to atone for our sins and satisfy God’s holiness. Shabbat Shalom!

Parashat Ki Tavo. The thought that the Torah does not bring perfection, and that Moses himself foresaw another and higher stage of divine revelation, is to be discerned in the Torah itself, and we see it in this week’s portion.

Parashat Ki Tetse - Jesus took on himself the curse of the one who had sinned and his body hung on a tree. “Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree’ —that in Messiah Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Gal 3.13-14). Shabbat Shalom!
