We don't talk anymore."

"We Don't Sell Durians in Sungai Sepi Anymore"
On the usual days in the middle of the year – no festivals, no foofaraw, no nothing – you can tell that the average build of the people in Sungai Sepi is quite lithe. Barring the sweet plump old  neneks  and the gaunt yet paunchy  pakciks , the general popu...

Maryam is Engaged!
Maryam, OD-ing on choccies Trying to think of a way to properly word a good congratulations to my dearest Maryam, who got engaged today and I felt a pithy tweet or an errant Facebook status is less than appropriate. As she's heard me say a mite too often, "...

You know why I don't like communicating via text?

It's full of presupposition and assumptions that can't be immediately addressed.

Let's say the reader is reading this.

Their understanding of my intent, where I'm going with this and what my word choices mean will inevitably be colored by their perception of me.

what I mean when I say something
my emotional status
my intentions
my tone
what I am or am not aware of
what they think of me

All the above contribute to the text being misrepresented easily and not immediately rectified.

Any person can read this and have certain words broadcasted more loudly in their head, and thus achieve different understanding of what it means regardless of what it's supposed to impart.

"So?"

So understanding text and understanding people are two different skills. One takes a lot more effort than the other.

Do not make the mistake of understanding or assuming you're being understood simply by thinking you've achieved good communication.

Listen. Talk. Ask. Opine. Share. Take time to comprehend and understand.

And if you really care to understand people, overall, you have to be patient. You have to have to be patient.

I say all this to myself too of course.
I'm still learning.

So the 'me' generation is what they call this. Everybody takes pictures, everyone writes, everyone makes videos. Everything is shared. A status here, a check-in there, a tweet here and a hashtag there.

Everyone you know who has an internet connection owns a gallery of curated created ephemera.

Yes, they're ephemeral because as much as you enjoy taking that group photo of you and your friends jumping in unison back in 2009, do you even remember what that picture looks like now? When was the last time you looked at it? What about that tweet you posted three weeks ago?

Back when devices of media creation were cumbersome, expensive and required actual finesse to control and use, making something was special. People worked long and hard to be able to create something meaningful to themselves, and among these people, fewer still are able to craft things that make meaning to the outside world.

What does it mean to be a 'content creator' now? Any breathing creature can push buttons and be accidentally witty or insightful once or twice by producing at sheer volume.

And man do we have volume. How many YouTube channels are there? Twitterfolk? Bloggers, websites, podcasts, livestream shows, commentary videos, unboxings, online magazines, talk radio can there be out there? Available at any time at no cost at all?

My position as one who fancies himself a Maker stands somewhere at the precipice at the time of writing.

I don't see my own work pushing through the collective viscera pouring unstoppingly out of the Earth's however-billion creators' brains. Much less think that maybe my work can be of any real value to anyone who pays attention.

I want to say that maybe making things is obnoxious. Maybe insisting that whatever I have in my head is Important and that People Must Know is a grandiose delusion sustained primarily through subconsciously detected peer pressure.

Maybe this structure of rewarded narcissism is what's the problem with these self-absorbed me-lennials tricking themselves into believing that whatever they had for lunch, saw that day, thought of while on the shitter, is Very Important. In fact, warranting documentation. People are so guided by the "Look! My observations and unique point of view received x number of arbitrary metric!" type of thinking that they internalize it and think it normal to maintain their 'brand'. As if being a person who lives in the real world and only there is not enough.

I'm aware of the irony in posting this online, but the sentiment still stands.

Maybe you and I should go outside and talk in person. Like real people. Or is that too much to ask of us?
