Oh my gosh. Many, many, many. Depends on what he's in the mood for. In the Oldtown heart of ABQ, there are:
- Crepe Michel (French; excellent food; great atmosphere; small; call ahead for reservations; $$)
- Antiquity (Steak; romantic; reservations also a good idea; $$$)
- Seasons (Fusion/American; tends to have some southwest-y accents; usually can get in even w/o reservations, except during peak times -- festivals, Saturday nights, etc.; $$-$$$)
But there are a bunch of good choices as you go further out as well. Depends on what you're looking for.
Our favorite Mexican place is El Norteno (Wyoming Blvd, just north of the I-40 freeway, west side of street, $-$$.) Our favorite New Mexican place is probably Ortega's (Wyoming, a bit further north, west side of street @ Comanche, $-$$). A popular place is El Pinto (North Valley -- 4th St heading north out of the city, just before 4th ends; New Mexican; fantastic atmosphere; good food, but a bit touristy; worth calling for reservations if you can -- I've had a hard time getting in.)
And Albuquerque turns out to have a thriving Vietnamese community and culinary scene. Que Hong is a good choice, IIRC.
A University hangout and a bit of a road food experience is the Frontier Restaurant (Central Ave, just across from the University, near Yale Blvd, IIRC. Go at breakfast time and have the cinnamon rolls. $)
Between Oldtown and the University, along Central Ave are Artichoke (modern American, $$$), Standard Diner (modern American, $$), and Route 66 Diner (50's diner style; awesome milkshakes and good green chile cheese burgers; $).
A very interesting experience is "Vernon's Hidden Valley Steak House" (4th St, north of the city, but not as far north as El Pinto.) The schtick is that it's done as a Prohibition era speakeasy, including needing a password to get in the door. (Call or Easytable for reservations a must!) Live jazz some nights. Excellent, excellent food and great atmosphere, but $$$$. (Seriously -- you can be looking at $100+/head.)
If that's not enough choices, I'm sure we can come up with some others as well. ;-)
