As a doctor and brain-based executive coach, I’m always asked the same question: “How can I be better?” There are many ways of asking that question,, and the details surrounding it are infinite. But the question ultimately remains the same. No one ever asks to meet with me because they feel they are exactly where they want to be. This is true for even some of the healthiest or most successful individuals — they too want to keep improving.

How aware are you of your space in relation to your productivity? The energy we receive, and which is taken, by our physical spaces is remarkable. Our “stuff” can create barriers for our thinking and our growth. Your primary space of work has a direct effect on your output. The poor lighting, uncomfortable chair, piles of papers and unnecessary distractions are hindering your ability to perform at your best. Implement these 5 tools to optimize your productivity by setting up your desk for success.

Studies are constantly showing us that we are making ourselves ill with the way we structure our lives. Incorporating breaks, sleep, and time in your day where you are doing “nothing”, may in fact give you the ability to get “everything” done with more accuracy, engagement and fulfillment.

Are we too quick? In this age of text, email, messengers, and various social media tools, are we swiping, liking, and responding too fast? We all tend to expect immediate responses and do not always take the time to process the information at hand. Our communication methods might need to integrate some moments of mindfulness to ensure we are not only processing the information but responding effectively. Faster is not always better.

There was a time, not too long ago, when the word “intensity” was my guiding light. I was “all in, all the time”. I coveted the “hustle” and “grind” and the speed that came with it all, and I wanted more of it. This was a very raw and turbulent way to live. However, I stayed the course because I thought it was the best way to create the type of life and work that I wanted. My point of reference, simply and naively, was that this was the way I have always done things. From medical school, to sport teams, to being in a rock band, to running committees – I did it all with this approach. I ended up creating a lot this way, but it wasn’t sustainable. And so I started to resent my work, as well as other parts of my life.

Let’s cut to the chase — you need both process and outcome to be successful. For a sustainable and productive business you can’t ignore either of these metrics. However, this is only the start of the conversation.

Simply put, it is not enough to have a vision without a strategic plan, and at the same time a strategic plan without a vision is a road to nowhere. In MINDSHIFT terms, we teach clients how to hold both a micro and macro lens as they navigate the often turbulent waters of entrepreneurship and business. Applying both a micro and macro lens helps us understand the powerful relationship between process and outcome.

“I wear many hats.” I hear that a lot. Especially from women. “I wear many hats. I have to play different roles for different people.” Something about this has been bothering me lately. Not that I don’t get it. Oh, I get it. I feel it. I have lived that way for years and years. But something about the way that statement sits, doesn’t work for me anymore. It emphasizes a compartmentalized life. A compartmentalized way of living. These statements don’t empower me. They don’t help me be whole. One person. One full dynamic person.

Communicating clearly is a relationship essential, whether it be professional or personal. At times, however, it’s more powerful to show vs. tell. When it feels like everything is going wrong, tensions are high, everyone is sensitive and stressed out, it might be best to stop talking about it. Play a mind trick on yourself: ignore the problem and instead give more love. This may seem like an impossible, perhaps even a ridiculous ask, but stay with me here. Just for a day, or a couple of days, or even for a week — try ignoring the problem. This isn’t a Jekyll and Hyde thing. This is about making room for a MINDSHIFT.

In the fall we wrote a blog entitled How to MINDSHIFT the Election. We admit, it’s been a challenge! Some days it feels downright impossible, but we never said it was going to be easy. Showing up isn’t always easy, and applying a solution-focused approach isn’t always natural. Quite frankly, sometimes you want to just yell or cry. We’ve been there, and we’ve done both! But we have also chosen not to stay in that space. It’s not productive and that’s not where positive change happens.
