Sex education was marred by controversies when it was introduced in schools, but if you recollect, it only centered on measures to take to prevent pregnancy. When the time comes for you to have a baby, you try to work your brain to its fullest capability only to discover there is nothing fundamental you learned.

Eat more complex ("slow") carbs and limit highly processed ones. Your body digests bad carbs (like cookies, cakes, white bread and white rice) quickly, and turns them into blood sugar. To drive down the blood-sugar spike, the pancreas releases insulin into the bloodstream. Good carbs (those containing fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains) are digested slowly and have a more gradual effect on blood sugar and insulin. Studies have found that high insulin levels appear to inhibit ovulation.

Does Caffeine Affect Your Fertility? It might. Some studies have found a link between caffeine consumption and a woman's ability to conceive, while others have not. Most experts say there just isn't enough evidence to make a definite conclusion about caffeine and fertility. Caffeine is a common ingredient in food and drink, so getting a big dose is easier than you may think. Having too much caffeine is also linked to fetal growth restriction, which could result in low birth weight and/or miscarriage. So it makes sense to cut down on caffeine, or cut it out altogether given that even low consumption rates may have an effect. Talk to your specialist if you are at all worried about your caffeine intake, ideally before your treatment starts.

People who are trying to conceive a child often ask what they can do in order to increase their chances. For the people who are among the 13% of Australians that smoke at least once every day, the answer is very simple. The best thing that they can do to increase their chances of conceiving and improve their health throughout their pregnancy and later life is to quit smoking.

The magic nutrient: Vitamin B6. This is one of the most important vitamins in aiding conception as it regulates the hormones. A B6 deficiency can lead to irregular menstruation and can also lead to poor egg and sperm development.

While we sleep, our bodies are busy repairing cells and regulating our hormones, among many other processes. One special hormone, leptin, is a key link between sleep and fertility. Leptin affects ovulation, and women need adequate sleep for proper leptin production. When leptin production is compromised, menstrual cycles are disrupted. Be consistent in your sleep routine. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Don’t sleep in on the weekends, no matter how tired you feel.

Stress can interfere with conception. That's because stress can affect the functioning of the hypothalamus — the gland in the brain that regulates your appetite and emotions, as well as the hormones that tell your ovaries to release eggs. If you're stressed out, you may ovulate later in your cycle or not at all. Work on relaxation.Take five minutes or so to close your eyes and transport yourself to a mini-mental vacation. Meditation can help you to deal with your stress and your body'll be thankful for the relaxation.

If you’re trying to get pregnant, or intend to start trying, know that being overweight – especially significantly so – can affect your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby. Being underweight can also reduce a woman’s fertility. If you are planning to get pregnant in the next year or few years, healthy eating and regular exercise can boost your fertility. #TryingToConceive #Besscription #WomensHealth
