Joke Sparked Breaking Bad Inspiration!

Breaking Bad's creator has disclosed how he came up with the hit TV show.

Vince Gilligan said it was a phone conversation with a friend that first got him thinking about the show, which tells the story of a terminally ill chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin.

The talk with his friend Tom Schnauz took place about 10 years ago when both men had been writers on The X-Files and were both looking for the next gig.

"He made the joke that we should put a meth lab in the back of an RV and travel America - he was making a joke, but that really stuck with me," Gilligan said in an AMA session on Reddit.

"The idea of doing a show about a character that would do that seemed fun to explore - and that was the inspiration."

Gilligan also revealed that there is talk to turn the fictional fried chicken fast food chain featured in the show, Los Pollos Hermanos, into a real restaurant.

"This is not an idea that I generated personally. But it's one that's been presented to me, through the good folks at Sony, and the idea came to them from a businessman who has an interest in doing just that," Gilligan said.
Speaking for myself, I'd love to see that happen."

Breaking Bad ended in 2013 after five seasons. Regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, it turned Bryan Cranston, who played lead character Walter White, and Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, into huge stars.

Gilligan has since worked on Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.

Crime writer Ruth Rendell has died aged 85, her publisher says.

She wrote more than 60 novels in a career spanning 50 years, her best-known creation being Inspector Wexford, which was turned into a highly successful TV series.

Rendell, one of Britain's best-selling contemporary authors, also wrote under the pen-name Barbara Vine.

Born in Essex, she is credited with bringing a social and psychological dimension to crime fiction.

Publisher Penguin Random House said Rendell, who suffered a stroke in January, died in London on Saturday morning.

"We are devastated by the loss of one of our best-loved authors," the publisher said in a statement.

Penguin Random House chair, Baroness Gail Rebuck, said Rendell was admired throughout publishing for her "brilliant body of work".
"An insightful and elegant observer of society, many of her award-winning thrillers and psychological murder mysteries highlighted the causes she cared so deeply about."

Rendell's first Wexford book, From Doon with Death, was published in 1964, beginning a series of more than 20 starring Insp Reginald Wexford, played in the TV series by George Baker.

Many of her works were translated into more than 20 languages and adapted for cinema and TV, attracting worldwide sales of 60 million.

ZAPP BOX Movie News - Popular new teaser trailer is DC's ‘Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ Dominated by a brooding voiceover, it sounds like Superman is the hero being blamed for doing good, with Batman presumably assigned to bring him down. Away from the big-budget blockbusters, Denzel Washington has signed up for a sequel to the successful movie update to the TV show ‘The Equalizer.’

Check out our Film of the Week, ‘The November Man.’ Packed with action and great stunt sequences, it's the fast-and-furious bits of Bond (in all but name and mega-budget) and makes for a great Friday night popcorn guzzler.

Black Mass trailer: Johnny Depp might have started making good films again!

Following the mixed bag of let-downs that were Transcendence, The Lone Ranger and all of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, it looks like Johnny Depp's agent might have got things back on track, with the first trailer for Black Mass looking promising.

Depp transforms into notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger for the crime drama, which comes from Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper.

The trailer revolves around a dinner party gone sour, and while it kind of rips off that infamous Joe Pesci scene in Goodfellas, it's quite chilling all the same.

Amy Winehouse documentary 'misleading' says father

The family of Amy Winehouse have criticised a new documentary about her life which is being shown at this year's Cannes Film festival.

The singer's father called it "misleading", but the film-makers say it was made with "total objectivity".

The book world has been focused on award ceremonies this week, with the winners of both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Stella Prize announced in the past few days. The 2015 Stella Prize, which celebrates female writers in Australia, was awarded to Emily Bitto's fascinating tale of bohemian life, ‘The Strays.’ Sticking with both Australian authors and prize winners, our Book of this Week is Richard Flanagan's ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North.’ Awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2014, The Narrow Road to the Deep North tells the story of a soldier interned in a Japanese POW camp during World War Two, who is forced to work on the Burmese railway.
