Any ruby hackers out there need a project to work on? I've got one I'd love to see implemented, and Ruby looks to be the right choice for it as far as support libraries for the various parts needed go. One of them needs some work first, then it should just be a matter of gluing together the various parts.

Just stared at a joke with the punchline "ctrl-alt-del" for the better part of 2 minutes trying to get it. Then it hit me, "Oh yeah, reboot when the OS is hosed." Haven't used windows in so long I actually forgot about that key combo for a bit.

Haha. Bet Apple didn't see this coming!!!

I can't make this stuff up

I'm sitting in a Starbucks doing random whatever over an iced americano. While I waiting for my drink, I watched a guy with his friend, pick up a newspaper; and start to remark on the Samsung Apple verdict.

Guy: "Wait, so what they're saying is, Samsung is the same as Apple?"
Friend: "I know, right? Makes me think twice about how much I paid for my Mac Book"
Guy: "Seriously"

Not 10 minutes later, a husband and wife, same newspaper:

Husband: "... Samsung's iPad is the same as Apple's iPad, and I paid how much for the Apple one? Honey, I told you they were a ripoff", after looking up the Samsung tablet on his iPhone.
Wife: "Oh wow," looking at the screen, "... that's a lot cheaper. Think we can return it?"

I put my Samsung QX410 on my table, and started to plug in, when he leans over to me, "Sorry, you don't mind if I ask, how much did you pay for your Samsung laptop?"

"Oh, no worries, it was $700." I replied.

I watched shock overcome his face, like actual shock. He looked at me, blankly, for an awkward amount of time, "Mind if I have a look?" he asked.

So, I obliged, and showed him a few things. He commented on Windows 7, so I opened up my virtual machine of OS/X... By the time the conversation was over, he was ready to kick Cupertino in the nuts, I think.

... Now, the punchline:

I'm writing this post after the FOURTH group of Starbucks patrons have made the connection that Samsung is now the same as Apple. They don't know the details, they don't really care, what they know is Apple is saying that Samsung is the same as Apple ... and with one simple Google Search, you get prices that are basically half for what seems to be the same products -- for nearly everything.

Two of these groups (including the husband/wife) asked me about my Samsung laptop, the second group noticed my Galaxy phone (also by Samsung)... Best billion dollar ad-campaign Samsung ever had.

My hope is that this judgement against Samsung does more to spawn innovation on the Android front that hinder it. Maybe there will be some settlements on the fundamental features to avoid further litigation.

Also, hopefully folks will wake up and see Apple and their pretty but overly priced hardware and software and topmost on the list, the tightly locked down ecosystem, and leave it in search of more open products that provide better value. The article, while a bit humorous on the ignorance of the layperson, did show an unexpected reaction to the judgement that for some may make them reconsider their current brand choice.

huh, so G+ couldn't load the CSS, so instead of showing a horrible mangled page that was unusable, it showed an error message. I can think of a few other sites that should take notice. (github, I'm looking at you, and I'm sure +Don MacAskill is too.)

Great article. Thanks +Robb Romans for pointing it out.
At the second RailsConf, David Heinemeier Hansson told the audience about a recruiter trying to hire with “5 years of experience with Ruby on Rails.” DHH told him “Sorry; I've only got 4 years.” We al...

Anyone have any experience with "roomie" iphone/ipad remote control software and/or Global Caché's iTach family? Considering it instead of the hated logitech link. Just kinda feels like serious price gouging when I look at the price breakdown:

$110 for iTach IP2IR
$30 or $50 for IR control on PS3 (may skip this due to cost, but would be nice)
$9.99 for main app
$19.99!!! for "home theatre" expansion to un-cripple it
$9.99 for IR support expansion
$9.99 for programming schedule enhancement (may skip this due to cost, but would be nice)

So we're talking at least $150... maybe $210. Which is either a lot for a remote control solution, or practically nothing for the ultimate solution for everything for the next 50 years. Hard to say which.

I think it's the only way to look at gadgets as they all have a fairly limited lifespan.

hmm. getting a weird mDNS issue lately that I can't seem to figure out. One of my machines, a headless server, keeps reporting that it has a name conflict. The system only has one active network connection, the hardwired ethernet. Of course when it stumbles over this, nothing else on the network is answering for the name alice, or on the address dhcp claims it had before.

Thankfully it doesn't impact the IPv6 address, so I can still get back into it to fix it. But it does seem to impact time machine if I don't get to it fast enough. :(

Anyone have any ideas what's going on with this box? The usual sources like google searches and stack exchange sites don't have any obvious matches.

Yet another reason to be proud of my employer.

Superheroes for Sam

Have you heard of Sam? He's a 6 year old who has three siblings and wishes he also had a pet turtle and a frog. Sam also has acute myeloid leukemia and needs all the support he can get right now: http://supermansamuel.blogspot.com/p/about-sam.html

+Google+ -ers, let's show Sam that we've got his back and are on Team Superman Sam. Photograph yourself wearing your favorite superhero shirt (or holding up the logo, or just giving him a super hero high five), and mail it to:
