The working title for this article was, "These Days, Monopoly is Just a Board Game."

I started to argue that Amazon wasn't and isn't a monopoly, but then I also managed to argue myself out of becoming an Amazon Cheerleader.  Since I was looking into anti-trust statues and case law (spoiler: it's dry) we're going to wade into that half of the post first.  But stick with me; I hope by the end I've also convinced you of the promise of that over-ambitious title up there.

"Most people are aware of Frank as a pop culture icon but outside of the fanbase I don’t know of many people who’ve actually heard the music. These three albums, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, and Lumpy Gravy — complex, virtuosic, accessible in parts but also challenging — are an excellent place to start. Amazingly, these were Zappa’s first three albums."

Hackers may accomplish what Microsoft can’t - killing off Windows XP

http://qz.com/203542/hackers-may-accomplish-what-microsoft-cant-kill-off-of-windows-xp/
Despite the fast growth of Google's Chrome web browser, Microsoft's Internet Explorer still has hundreds of millions of loyal users, and remains the most popular browser in the world for desktop computer use. But that lead could be in jeopardy after Microsoft said over the weekend that its browser is vulnerable to an attack that could allow...

I'm not 100% on board with the conclusion here, or the predictions of TV's future, but this is an excellent recap of the recent headlines that impact what we watch, where, and how:

Wow. The new Google Stars sounds like it will be great
- but imagine how much more effective it could have been if Google had some sort of feed aggregator or 'reader' to launch this new feature on

...yes I'm still bitter.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/23/5643774/google-is-testing-stars-an-attempt-to-make-bookmarking-actually-useful
Bookmarking: every web browser has it, few human browsers actually use it. Google is testing a new Chrome feature that would allow users to save any piece of content — an email, a web page, an...

Disco was born in Philadelphia. We even know which song it was, written by Gamble and Huff, recorded at Sigma Sound by the O’Jays (backed by MFSB), and released by Philadelphia International.

“American Sound Studio was a recording studio located at 827 Thomas Street in Memphis, Tennessee. More than one hundred hit songs were recorded there between its founding 1967 and its closing in 1972, The music for these hits was played by the house band ‘The Memphis Boys’, also known as the ’827 Thomas Street Band’. Artists who recorded at American Sound Studio included Elvis Presley, Merrilee Rush, Aretha Franklin, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield, B. J. Thomas, Joe Tex, Roy Hamilton and The Box Tops.”

Question: what happened/changed in September, anyway?

Google plus as "plumbing"

http://www.wired.com/2014/04/google-plus-as-plumbing/

hm.

It may be the circles (heh) I run in, but nobody actually likes Facebook, or if they do, they like the Facebook from 4 or 5 years ago (when they first joined) and only kinda tolerate it now.  Or they're your grandma. Or that asshole you hated in high school and you only accepted their friend request because you confused them for the other Chris and now you feel bad about dropping them...

I think that's where Facebook fails for me - it's based on friends and family.  If I wanted to hang out with those people, I wouldn't be spending so much of my time online.
It’s no surprise that people are questioning the future of Google+ after Google announced that Vic Gundotra is leaving the company and that Google+ will now be run not by Bradley Horowitz but by someone few outside the company have ever heard of.

A recent Bloomberg article revives the old Amazon sales tax debate (if we’re still debating this) so I thought I’d dig up the appropriate links and Wikipedia articles for everyone to reference again:
