The Catholic Church has announced that Junipero Serra will be canonized as a saint. The sad truth is that he was far from a saint. In his zeal to convert Native Americans, they were enslaved and tortured. If they misbehaved, they were whipped, branded, mutilated or even executed.
“If he is elevated to sainthood,” said Nicole Lim, the executive director of the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center in Santa Rosa, “then he should be held responsible for the brutal and deadly treatment of native people.”
