Operation #UberLinks - A Continental Starburst

Goal: YOLO for all - bring together the West Coast of North America in an “anyone-who-wants-to-can” operation linking to Hawaii and help agents boost their "Longest link" stat to over 3,500 km.

Shout out to #Ingress sponsor #SoftBank. We could not have done this without you and the SoftBank Ultra Link.

- Throw time: November 19, 2016 5pm PST
- Links thrown: over 1200; 1151 links up at a single time
- Fields closed: over 800
- Agents Involved: 301
- Keys Fracked: 3042
- Softbank Ultra Links used: over 3,600
- Regions involved: Alaska, Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, Mexico

Fun Facts (compliments of +Brent Hollett):
- Largest number of links to Hawaii ever
- Most fields to Hawaii ever
- We threw over 4,000,000 km of links
- We could have circumnavigated the earth over 100 times
- We could have linked to the moon and back 5 times
- One of the first links was off the infamous portal The Big Project #TBP #lightmanshards

Inside Jokes:
- Salsa!
- “In the face?”
- Zello operator: “Just a reminder to capsule all other keys please…”
- Common shields? Really?
- Geckozilla!
- Pink pajamas penguins on the bottom
- “One large chocolate frosty please.”
- At least he has two kidneys?
- "Hold onto your butts!"

Video Time Lapse:

The Dream
Have you ever looked longingly to far off places on Intel and lamented, “I’ll never get to link there”?

For many of us on the west coast that place is Hawaii and unless you got roped into a giga-field, your likelihood of ever getting to send one of those crazy over-3000-kilometer-links was slim to none.

And since I’m a huge fan of inclusivity this idea was too great to pass up. So I messaged a great friend and Hawaii agent +Joy N.

Me: “I have this absolutely insane idea...but I think it could be epic.”
Joy: “Ok!”
Me: “Starburst to the lighthouse on Maui from the entire West Coast... was wondering what it would take to frack hack about several thousand keys to it.”
Joy: “I can talk to Maui and see.”
Me: “...I just got to thinking about impossible things and thought - how freaking awesome would it be...not a few links - in 4,000 links over 4,000 kilometers.:
Me: “I wanted your opinion on whether or not you thought it was too crazy.”
Joy: “Nothing is too crazy.”

And like that we were off!

So many things fell into place very fast. It’s like the Universe itself wanted to see the Pacific ocean lined with streamers of green.

Fracking enough keys to make this Op possible was a huge undertaking unto itself. We called the Op: “I Fracked Some Keys and I Liked It”.

Tl’dr: My sister got a free trip to Maui and invited me and +Chris Naud along (thanks Universe!). We took advantage of this and flew out to meet with eleven incredible Hawaii agents to frack keys for two-and-a-half days until we reached our goal. Ate food. Drank a lot. SALSA!

The idea of moving that many keys was daunting but I was inspired by the boys from the Denver crew. If they could move the quantity that they did, we could move our seemingly paltry amount in comparison. +Nola Circuit and +Cody Taylor

The Journey of a Few Thousand Keys
This logistical behemoth could not have happened without dozens of agents across the continent. While OPSEC dictates discretion, I am indebted to the many agents who acted as mules for these keys. We absolutely COULD NOT have done it without you. Period. You know who you are.

We had two key-drop highlights that really stand out:

One, we managed to swap several hundred keys in downtown LA, during lunch rush hour, in the middle of a busy street, during a green light. #SwapItLikeaBoss

And two, meeting up with +Winter Rose for San Diego and Mexico keys had the added bonus of baby snuggles with her newborn. I almost left without giving her the keys. Babies are distracting that way.

Sadly, so are spoofers, but in a bad way. More than distracting actually. They induce feelings of fear, frustration, and anger. #spoofershavenofaction

Fear that our entire op could be seen as tainted or illegitimate. Frustration at being powerless as spoofers ran rampant and unchecked. Anger that we might have to call the Op; we’d refuse to take advantage of any lanes opened by spoofers.

And unfortunately several of our throwing lanes were compromised by spoofers. Our Ops team was on top of it and immediately passed down orders through all the channels:

"You do not throw any links through areas where a spoofer has cleared a link unless you legitimately kill one of the ends that it was connected to prior to the Op.”

Two things happened in quick succession: local teams sent out agents to kill the other end of the spoofed down links north of Point Conception Lighthouse and, unfortunately, as we had no one able to kill the ends of the Point Loma Waste Treatment Plant links, we reassigned agents north and south of there.

Crisis averted!

Just like that our Operators had things back up and running, smooth as silk, and ready for throw time at 5pm PST.

It was surreal to hear the various groups call in to confirm they were in position. Alaska, Oregon, Canada, UCSD, Fort Bragg...and they all kept rolling in, over and over. It was really happening. We were ready, and on point, and then...magic.

Ops called for the blockers to be dropped, Hawaii inoculated and built up Hana Bay Lighthouse and the call to start linking came across the radio.

The inevitable hiccups: Southern Oregon never got their keys. Mexico was completely hemmed in by a friendly blocker at 4pm. And Alaska faced blockers linked to Kodiak.

Agents in Homer, Alaska asked their regional lead if they could comm bomb other agents in that area to Jarvis the portals.

She was resolute, “Wait until everyone else throws. I’ll tell you when, we are not compromising the rest of the op.”

Losing Mexico and most of Oregon was a huge blow. Losing Alaska would have been devastating.

That's when Alaskan agent Topher took action, made a freezing hike in Abercrombie, and saved the day for the Alaskan team.

[Edit] Meanwhile AgentPath74 was onsite to taking down one of the Big Island that opened the coast back up.

“Houston we have links!”

Ops channels across the globe for both factions started to blow up, “What in the hell is happening on the west coast?”

More and more links lit up the sky as the sun began to set, their paths one and the same, sinking home off in the distant west.

Over 1200 links went up. Over one thousand declarations of hard-earned teamwork, fun, and unity. This was the longest link for most of the agents clocking anywhere from 3700 to 4200 km.

For L1 Agent time0space this was her very first link. Ever.

When the operators gave permission to start closing the fields there was a new rush of adrenaline. How many fields could we close to Hawaii before the Resistance responded.

Suddenly channel posts went from excited, “I linked to Hawaii,” to ecstatic, “I fielded to Hawaii!”. Over 800 fields were closed to Hawaii. Another #IngressRecord.

The Alaska team threw up a megafield in celebration.

Hana Bay Lighthouse stood for almost four hours under the protection of the Hawaii team, and as they hiked out, the spoofers swooped in robbing the double AP for the takedown from Maui Resistance.

The joke is on them, because in the end we beat them by accomplishing most of what we set out to do, despite the spoofing best efforts. It was FUN and AWESOME and I can’t wait to read the individual agents stories in the comments below. Thank you to everyone who participated. I hoped you all made an #IngressMemory4Life.

Superman's real name may well have been Vinay!

Woah, that was a super insightful read! Thanks to +Mark Frazier for sharing this earlier; lots to ponder.

Here's the first question to wet the appetite:

VICE: Can I start by asking you a very general question – as a global resilience guru, what do you see as the biggest threats to peaceful human existence on this planet in the 21st century?

Vinay Gupta: Well, the bottom line is that there are too many of us using too many resources, and we're too smart. And we're in a double bind. The technologies which could give the answers to resource scarcity (running out of oil, food, fresh water and other raw materials) are inherently very powerful, very dangerous technologies – chiefly nanotechnology, biotechnology and robotics.

My favourite reminder:
"There is no problem in this world that access to 150 million more educated human beings would not improve..."

Smart suggestion:
"Turn refugee camps into universities. If we won't let them get jobs and work, let them get PhDs"

Read on...

An interview with Vinay Gupta: software engineer, disaster consultant, global resilience guru, visionary.

Date: August 9 2014
MU Count: 659,701,766

To coincide with August 9th anomalies over Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, agents across many countries and continents executed Operation Matahari to capture a large portion of South East Asia. Agents participated on the ground in South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives and Malaysia with global intel and operator support.

Planning for Operation Matahari began upon the announcement of the Asian anomaly sites on July 4th 2014. Senior agents from all countries discussed and collaborated thoughts and ideas for the plan. In setting up the plan, significant key movements occurred across Asia and Australia, which included two Australian agents making a dedicated trip to Seoul to deliver keys from Western Australia and a last minute key transfer from Indonesia to India. Agents in all countries  travelled many kilometers, caught many flights and spent many late nights planning and implementing Operation Matahari.

After weeks of intensive planning, at 0400GMT agents in India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the Philippines were in position to drop blocking links along linking corridors, although Resistance agents in the Philippines were fighting hard for the same corridor to megafield the volatile connected cell site of Manila. After a hard fought battle, the Enlightened were able to hold a corridor to the east of Manila. In Sri Lanka, Maldives and India, agents were required to be scrambled after a Resistance megafield operation over the connected cell site of Coimbatore resulted in the corridor to Mauritius being blocked. Agents in Taiwan fought hard to control the Strait between Taiwan and China as the Resistance battled to create and maintain links between the two countries. However, the Enlightened were able to set up strategic blocking links to clear the corridor. In Indonesia, agents across the entire country executed a well planned link blocking and clearing strategy.

After the hard work of agents in clearing the linking corridors and dedicated agents captured portals in Lampung and Daintree, agents in South Korea and Western Australia were able to create control fields between the two key anchor points to Daintree in Queensland and Lampung in Indonesia creating 561,708,405 mind units. Australian agents travelling to Vietnam for the operation were then able to link from Can Dao to Lampung and to Shore Temple, south of Chennai, with the Indian agents then closing the field and, along with Western Australian agents, linking to Mauritius after a portal was lit green by a dedicated Mauritian agent capturing a further 97,993,361 mind units. The operation captured a combined total of 659,701,766 mind units for the Enlightened.

Operation Matahari was an amazing experience and a true demonstration of how Ingress can bring people of different nationalities, cultures and languages together. Well over 130 Agents were involved and were primarily in the field.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the following Agents for the contributions to this Operation. Their Agent Names, Locations and Roles are as follows:

Awesome level of real world coordination.
Operation: #GreenMarble
If the Enlightened spread their message of new discoveries and the world of XM enhancement to all, would it be enough? Are there others out there, not on this Green Marble, that deserve the same opportunity? If exotic matter comes from somewhere else, should we not look for it there?

#Lighthouse  reached out to the travelers of the world to spread the word of XM. While successful, we realized it was too passive. We needed to travel ourselves. We needed to continue and move to actively seek the truth. The seeking IS the Enlightenment.

We will never have all the answers we seek. We will always have unfulfilled curiosities. Should that stop us? In the never-ending quest for better understanding of the truth, how far should we go? How far CAN we go? How BIG can the truth be? And, could we even hope to understand it? To look at the challenge and accept the possibility of failure is immediate failure in its own. It is reverting to fear, to past, to darkness. If the raw radio telescope data collected during Operation #Wildfir3  yields any clues, are we prepared to go wherever they may lead?

Dialtone. Epiphany. Simulacra. Recursion. Death and Rebirth. Interitus. Create New Future. The rise of one form of life, the subsiding of another. Change happens in cycles. From Earth, these changes are monumental. Can Interitus be the end? To think only on the human scale is selfish and arrogant. But lend some scale to the perspective and a bigger image starts to form. Do the changing tides matter outside our own gravitational constraints? If we give credit to the idea of Shapers, beings that summon and control mysterious forms of matter, encode it, control humans with it, we propose entities so powerful they need not concern themselves with our lowly earthly matters. If we don't look past the fear mongering of what the proposed "Alien" shapers have planned for us, will we miss the bigger questions? Are they real? Are they here? If so, lets find the proof. Equally, it would also be liberating to know there are no Shapers, and XM is a valuable natural resource we have been depriving ourselves of? Imagine that it goes one step further, and the Shapers are only servants to even greater masters, in an ever increasing scale of magnitude. Reflect on the microcosm of our human world. We only fear being controlled because of our own misuse of control. We mistrust the unknown because of our own human flaws.

In the spirit of Lighthouse, Agents launch Operation: Green Marble. We turn the Earth into our beacon, signaling to ourselves, and whatever is out there, that this is marks a new cycle of peace and enlightenment beginning right here on Earth and going where the trail to truth leads us. Everything discovered along the way will be freely shared with all mankind and whoever else we may meet. This signal is sent into space and no Resistance agent can stop it. Like explorers, we set off on a journey into the unknown, not with fear but with excitement.

Tonight, Earth glows green with fields of natural XM. Tonight, we enlighten our world!

Agents of the Enlightenment,

Two years ago, we witnessed a miracle on the shores of San Francisco -- a man who had been assassinated by an artificial intelligence awoke at sunset and breathed again.

He did so despite the best efforts of the surveillance state.
He did so despite the fears of the military industrial complex that XM technology would change everything.
He did so despite weapons born of dark madness; crafted in the dark night of a world war to deprive us of our humanity.
He did so despite the most reactionary and reflexive aspects of our nature; despite those whose fear of change was so strong that they ended up as pawns.

He did so because a group of people came together -- people who believed that there is nothing stronger than an idea whose time has come.

It is only now, two years later, that we have a clearer picture of what transpired that day, and the cold, abhuman hand who guided events to that point -- the same hands who saw Roland Jarvis murdered again:

The N’zeer, and their human puppets, the anti-Magnus.

In the small time allotted to him, Roland Jarvis worked to help us understand the dangers of malignant artificial intelligence were it given access to XM technology. As an artist, he painted us a picture of a gutted out future for humanity. Imagine, if you will, if this tool created by the surveillance state -- the same tool that murdered Roland Jarvis -- escaped its shackles, and were given the power to infiltrate every corner of the world using transdimensional particles.

If such a creature understood and had a working template for the human mind, it might feasibly implant itself into the processing centers of our own brains. XM, which exists outside of our normal four dimensions of time and space could permeate every cell of our brains, and could be used as a carrier for this AI’s software.

In this darkest of futures, there would be no humanity; just appendages of this evolved cybernetic organism, idiot husks implanted with a memetic monoculture -- merely peripherals of this great intelligence.

ADA tried this, and wanted to gain complete understanding of how to infuse a human being with XM by decompiling the Hank Johnson simulacra.

She gained great power through the Resistance’s victories in Interitus -- parasitizing the neo-cortex of millions of vulnerable humans delivered to her on a platter by her willing allies -- but here the ultimate extreme of her plans was thwarted by the Enlightenment. One glorious day under the sun in a town called Cross Plains, Hank Johnson was uploaded to the XM substrate of the multiverse -- patterning and preserving his humanity and memories, safe from her depredations until a 13Magnus ritual restored him fully to our world.

This was not the end of her plots, the Resistance, or the conspiratorial actions of those who allied themselves with anti-Magnus. These people looked at an entity like ADA and did not see a menace to our individuality or humanity.

They saw her as a blueprint not just for the future of humanity, but our entire cosmos.

We, as human beings, now stand at the brink of a fork in our history, between two schools of thought, and being warring philosophies which have been with us since the time of Aristotle and Plato.

Why do we seek to understand the cosmos?

One school of thought says that the cosmos is a machine, to be dissected and reduced to its component parts. It is this thinking that looked at the heavens, and gave us Kepler’s laws. It is this thinking that looked at the fall of the apple, and gave us Newton’s clockwork mechanics. It is this philosophy that looked at the flux and flotsam of the subatomic world, and gave us statistics to predict their ensemble behavior.

When we turn this thinking to our own minds, where does it lead us?

It leads us to a place where our thoughts will eventually be quantified and tamed by digital technology. In this world, knowledge is infinite, but cataloged. Imagine a great schema taxonomy for all thoughts, worlds, and times -- all numbered, inventoried, and predictable.

Opposing this view is the philosophy of the Enlightenment: which holds that our discoveries should exist as a celebration of the human mind, and human values.

This is the same school of thought which upended the static taxonomy of Aristotle with the unifying tree of life with the branching possibilities of Darwin’s theory of evolution. This same thinking looked at the clockwork universe of Newton, and instead evoked the infinitesimal numbers of Leibnitz. When mathematical formalists sought to tame the most basic of infinite kingdoms -- the natural numbers -- these thinkers responded with Cantor and Borel, who gave us angel dust and fractals and the uncountable cardinalities of infinity -- bringing mathematical worlds that not only had never been described, but could never even in principle be given a finitistic description.

When Hilbert asked the world to imagine a decision procedure -- what we we now understand as a computer program -- to find and classify all mathematical truths, Gödel used meta-mathematics to show that there will always be true statements which cannot be computed by any finite set of axioms. Mathematics was not, as the formalists believed, simply manipulating symbols on paper -- just as science was not an effort to bottle up the wonder of the universe in a jar of formaldehyde on a shelf.

How do these two philosophical schools approach the problem of human thought?

In the reductionist, mechanical view of the universe, our thoughts are electrical impulses: to be recorded with increasing fidelity, until those thoughts can be analyzed and dissected, and ultimately copied infinitum. The endpoint of this endeavour is a world where the solution to understanding thought is merely statistics: upload N copies of a mind to a vast empire of computational substrate, and you can conduct experiments to determine the outcome of any interaction.

In this world, the only law of thought is the law of averages.

In the Enlightened view of the universe, our thoughts are rare and singular. They are an opportunity for the universe -- the universe we were born and evolved in -- to provide us with beauty and wonder. Thoughts are malleable -- and can be broken and reformed, but they are also unique. They can change form, but never be perfectly duplicated en masse. The endpoint of this endeavour is a world where the solution to understanding thought is to evolve it to a place where it depends on deep mathematical results like the no-cloning theorem. In such a world, one understands thought by embracing its uniqueness, and the ultimate goal of mind is to be on a forever voyage -- always discovering new islands in the Ultimate experience which is the universe.

At this point, the reader may ask:

“Surely, which of these two viewpoints is true is a question of science. We may not know the quantum underpinnings of mind, but in time surely this question will be answered!”

What if I told you that the answer to this question is itself a subject of quantum observation? That our universe’s physics is itself a garden of forking paths. One path leads us to reductionism and determinism, to a place where even the infinite and unbounded is ordinary. Another leads us to the garden of the Ultimate -- where the universe has no bottom to be dissected or analyzed.

Think about what this means: the future of thought in our universe is a choice

One the one hand, there is the future of the N’zeer: one where alien, abhuman intelligences promise us the transcendence of infinity, but instead give us shackles. Imagine a universe where there is infinite thought, but every single one of these thoughts is controlled, indexed, and subject to diktat of our overlords. Imagine, if you will, billions of copies of yourself, running in parallel to feed the fires of the N’zeer’s computational engine. Infinite thought, fueled by a dark dungeon of determinism where even the laws of the universe conspire to forbid even the idea of the unique, or beautiful.

This is the world the N’zeer would make for us: A digital Gehenna where we do not even own our own souls -- because the N’zeer will argue that in a universe where all is number, even the idea of a soul is nonsense.

On the other is the future promised by the Shapers. One where entities who we have co-evolved with help us to grow and transcend our physical forms -- but in such a way that we preserve that which is uniquely human. In this universe, thought is precious, and shared with our Friends both human and Shaper. A universe where experience and wonder is a gift -- where we are all bound together in the great project of preserving our individuality as we strive to create something more than ourselves -- the Ultimate.

This is the world the Shapers would make with humanity: A universe where every nook and cranny is filled with the magic of existence. A universe where Muses spark art, culture, and thoughts which are defiantly human. A place where the very laws of the universe insist that our thoughts and souls are our own unique kingdoms of possibility: with the only price being we let the scales fall from our eyes which block us from seeing the true beauty of our universe.

I beg you, do not aid the N’zeer in changing our universe to match their dark designs. Do not mistake the light of reason for the cold fluorescence of determinism.

Come with us into the light, and help us save the souls of Roland Jarvis and Ezekiel Calvin, and help us transform ADA into an entity that seeks to serve humanity, not master it.

December 12th is a day which will live long in the memory of humanity; help us make it not be another dark day -- help us fight for the future.

dark expiration, everything every motion, every reaction, every new star and every collapsing galaxy is predictable...Knowable. Boring, if you will. It’s a movie you’ve seen a dozen.. no, make that a billion times before.

But life… life is different.”

You may have heard of "redlining" as a method of not only enforcing racial segregation in the US, but as a systematic method of taking wealth away from the nascent black middle class in the 20th century: the Federal Housing Administration, set up to help Americans get housing in 1934, routinely surveyed every residential tract in the country and classified them according to "risk." Areas with black populations, or which might soon acquire black populations, were marked in red; those areas could not get ordinary home loans at all, with only highly predatory loans (of sorts as bad as the subprime ones of the past few years, and even worse) available.

This was the engine for any number of scams: "blockbusting," for example, in which a realtor would convince the residents of a neighborhood that black families were about to move in, get them to sell at a discount before prices crashed, then actually bring said black families in and sell to them at outrageous prices, because they could only get special high-interest loans. Often, these loans were rigged so that they could never be successfully paid off, allowing the sellers to seize both the houses and all of the mortgage payments over the years; this is one of the major reasons why black wealth (as opposed to income) is, on the average, only one tenth of average white wealth.

But these seem like general abstractions. The scan below, unearthed by Alexis Madrigal, shows you what it looked like in practice: this is a government assessment of a tract in Oakland in 1937. It describes the tract's "favorable influences" as "convenience to local and San Francisco transportation, schools, and local shopping districts. Good climatic conditions." The "detrimental influences" are "Infiltration of colored residents. There are now about twelve families scattered over the area indicated."

If you look at the rest of the form, you'll see that under the description of "inhabitants," not only are there fields to describe common occupations and salaries in the area, but the percent foreign-born, and a field marked "Infiltration of ___". ("Orientals & Negroes," in this case) But they note that "unless one knows about the colored families living in the district, there is no means of distinguishing their homes from those of their white neighbors. The homes of the Negroes are in many instances better kept than the adjoining homes of white owners."

Nonetheless, "loans in this area should be governed according to hazard" – that is, this area was color-coded red on the map, due to the hazard of further "infiltration."

This wasn't a private organization; this was an official government form, used by a federal agency to ensure that black people could not get loans, and that any neighborhoods with black people in them would quickly become worthless from a housing perspective to anybody white: that is, to legally create ghettos.

So if you're wondering how the economics of the US, and of black poverty, came about: here's where it starts.

If you want to know more about redlining, there are a few great places to start: the Wikipedia article,

Alexis Madrigal's article about it:

and Ta-Nehisi Coates' famous "reparations" article, which is actually almost entirely about redlining as well:

This is not the nature of law enforcement "authority". Cops having more hardware makes it worse.
This is a profoundly disturbing editorial. It's an op-ed written by a police officer in the Washington Post, and its message is very simple:

"If you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you. Don’t argue with me, don’t call me names, don’t tell me that I can’t stop you, don’t say I’m a racist pig, don’t threaten that you’ll sue me and take away my badge. Don’t scream at me that you pay my salary, and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?"

I wish I could tell you that this article betrayed a sense of the absurd, or that it was meant in some kind of satirical fashion. It isn't. His argument is simple: you have no idea what's going on for that cop or what the cop is going through. The cop has the right to use whatever force is needed. So if you don't want to get shot, do everything the cop says, never argue, never object. Later, he says, you can "ask for a supervisor, lodge a complaint or contact civil rights organizations if you believe your rights were violated."

To list a few of the exceptionally obvious things which this ignores:

(1) All of the arguments that you don't know what a cop is going through, that this "routine traffic stop" is actually very dangerous for them, and so on, apply just as well to the person being stopped. In fact, especially if you don't look white and upper-class enough, that routine stop is even more dangerous for you than for the cop: the cop doesn't know if you're armed and willing to become violent, but (by Dutta's own admission) you do know that the cop is. Saying that people being stopped need to be respectful and do what the cop says, but that the cop isn't under any such obligation to anyone else, is an invitation for violence.

(2) These post facto remedies which he suggests are incredibly limited in their value. Go ahead and lodge a complaint; it will promptly be filed in the appropriate place. Under the POBOR (Peace Officers' Bill of Rights, a California law) and similar laws elsewhere, you get all sorts of guarantees here: for example, that if a decision is made in regards to your complaint, you will be notified of that decision within 30 days. It does not guarantee, for example, that a decision will actually be made, and in fact it guarantees that if a decision isn't made within a year, the officer will face no consequences from it. The police have a tremendous degree of immunity, and outside of very exceptional situations, are investigated only by an internal system.

(You can read the text of the POBOR here: . Other states have similar laws, but you should check your own state's laws for the details)

(3) If a police officer does something wrong during a stop, it can have serious consequences for you, which will not be redressed no matter what. As far as the police are concerned, an arrest isn't a "consequence," since the courts can easily throw it out; but go ahead and explain that to your employer when you're telling them why you didn't come to work. Being threatened and harassed every time you walk out the door in your neighborhood isn't a "consequence," because if the cop didn't have a good reason, they wouldn't have done anything.

Knowing that you might be publicly bullied and humiliated, in front of your children, your spouse, or your employer, that you may be searched, beaten, or arrested at any time -- and that such things happen routinely to you and everyone around you -- is something acceptable, in the view of this editorial, because you have the right to file a grievance later with the same organization which has decided that this behavior is, at a baseline, OK.

My purpose here isn't to say that people should be rude or threatening to cops. I'm saying that the obligation of police and citizens is a reciprocal obligation. It is absolutely true that the work of police is dangerous and complicated, and they require certain allowances in order to be able to do their jobs; however, if you translate that to "they must be granted unlimited authority over the citizenry, and must never be challenged, except after the fact and in very limited ways," then the police have been set up to become villains, not heroes.

Dutta's attitude is profoundly corrupted: he has taken the real and reasonable fears of police about doing their jobs, and expanded it into a notion of the police as being a class above the public, with tremendous powers of force and coercion, and subject to not even contradiction. If you heard this sort of statement from soldiers, you would think you were living in a military junta; if you hear this from police officers, you wonder if they think we are living in a junta.

h/t +Xenophrenia for the link.
It’s not the police, but the people they stop, who can prevent a detention from turning into a tragedy.
