Northern Mali has been unstable since the coup of early 2012. A long-awaited peace deal between warring groups was signed on June 20, but hasn't solved the country's problems. Banditry persists, and as many as 281 armed groups are roaming free in the north.

Here are four things you need to know about the crisis in Mali—and one way you can help.

An estimated one-third of children—some 200 million—under age 5 fail to meet their developmental potential. That's why early childhood development—a child's physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development from before birth to age 8—is a critical focus for CRS.

Toys can help by stimulating minds and engaging imaginations. In fact, toys are often a child's introduction to education, creativity and socializing.

We’re able to respond rapidly and effectively thanks to people—like you—who put their faith into action every month. Without the generosity of our monthly donors, we could not provide food, shelter, clean water and emergency care to suffering people around the world.

We are calling upon you to walk with our poorest brothers and sisters through Footsteps in Faith. Please join our loyal group of donors by supporting CRS every month with a faith-filled gift from your heart.

Caritas #Ukraine has provided humanitarian assistance to more than 50,000 conflict-affected people, and will support another 30,000 during the remainder of 2015. In the past month, Catholic Relief Services and Caritas Ukraine have opened six child-friendly spaces to support trauma counseling for up to 500 children.

With your help, we can continue providing emergency food, water, living and shelter supplies to families—and help them get back to work so they can support their families.

President Obama has signed the #GirlsCountAct into law. This legislation – passed unanimously by Congress – helps ensure children in developing countries are registered at birth, a key milestone that if missed causes a lifetime of hardship in getting basic services and rights, such as access to education, the right to vote, and getting a job. #WeCanTurnOnTheLight   #GirlsCount

Jemal, whose family depends on their two cows and two calves for income, is looking into the face of #climatechange that has brought too many years like this one: with erratic rainfall patterns that have plagued Ethiopia for 2 decades. Working with the local Church, Catholic Relief Services is trying to help communities like Jemal's adapt to climate change.

"Environmental degradation, deforestation and water supply problems expose most communities to food insecurity," says Belayneh Belete, the program director for a CRS' partner, the Hararghe Catholic Secretariat. "There are many cases of malnutrition as a result." Everyone suffers, she says.
