I thought a lot about quadtrees and space filling curves and the connections between them during my doctoral work. Google has a great spacial indexing library that uses some of the same concepts :-)

For maximum efficiency, don't allocate resources until you need them.

This is the coolest math related news article I've seen in a long time.

Solve puzzles and play games for science! Or for me. Whichever you prefer. :)

I'm doing research on automatic difficulty assessment of puzzle games. For this research, we need data about the difficulty of puzzles as perceived by real players, and we are currently performing a user study. One of my students has re-implemented three popular puzzle games. We need people to play the games, and for each level estimate its difficulty. You can play the games in your browser, either on a PC or a mobile device.

If you would like to help, please follow the link below.

Thanks!
Maarten

Social scientists working on a decades-long population study have recently concluded that every single living resident of the United States suffers from a condition known as imposter syndrome, a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments, except for you, an actual fraud who is almost certainly on the verge of being found out by the people who only think they love and respect you any day now.
