The Irving Street Kitchen manages to be both urban and rustic in its aesthetic design and cuisine. It occupies a cavernous warehouse space with a variety of seating options from private seating booths to fireside club chairs to the convivial atmosphere of the bar. In an open kitchen, Sarah Schafer and her talented staff serve up generous portions that are somehow both unstuffy and inventive. The cocktails and coffee are equally good and the bar is welcoming to solo diners. Tip: weekend brunch (with most dishes in the $8-$14 range) can get hectic in the late morning but slows down a bit closer to 2 pm.

Was looking forward to trying their fried chicken dinner as it was highly recommended by two of the waitstaff at a recent private event we had attended at this restaurant. Loved the atmosphere there. It was a surprise to me after the first couple bites as to how uneventful this meal was to be. I was expecting a lot more "speciality" seasoning in my food . This , too, was my husbands comment after starting in on his halibut ,a very small piece of white fish swimming in a light wash of tomatoes and olives . We really wanted to positive about the experience and I did give the chicken the full benefit by sampling it with the greens and smashed potatoes ( sorry, those were plain ol' mashed spuds ) with thin gravy and realized this food was nothing to write home about . My generous rating of three stars is being kind and notes that their chicken was just okay. To me, this raved about dish is was nothing other than a basic heavily breaded, three piece chicken meal that , if blindfolded, I would have guessed to have come from a grocery deli as it had no seasoning.... boring , basic and bland. I think the best part of the whole meal was the bread slices that the waitress brought to our table. That had flavor at least. We spent close to $80.00 on our meal tonight ( thats for one halibut dinner, one fried chicken dinner and two lukewarm coffees plus the waitress tip ) . We enjoy a good meal and love spending time in Portland. I was glad to try the Irving Kitchen for dinner but we will not be back . If you do plan to go, I would suggest eating something beforehand as my husband was still hungry afterwards.

The ribs were super small. Yes tasty, but when you see $26 for ribs you think i'm going to be full after eating them. I had three small (3"x2") pieces of (17 hrs) smoked boneless ribs. Not to mention while i'm on a date with my wife we were expecting to have some drinks and an appetizer. Well the cheapest wine was over $10/glass, so we decided to pass. Two weeks ago I was in France for business and had great wine for much cheaper! The appetizer was good, had the $12 Country Ham with Biscuits. Could have used two more biscuits for the amount of sides they provided. But otherwise tasty. Overall, I don't recommend, and we won't be back.

Disappointed. None of the 4 meals at my table were even mediocre. The place came highly recommended too. The service was great at least and dessert was pretty good also. Maybe they just had a bad night in the kitchen.

Great food. I dream of their Butterscotch Pudding. You can have it late at night at the bar. Good brunch too. Relaxed casual atmosphere.

As soon as we walked into this space, we knew it was going to be fun, warm, friendly and romantic. The service was stellar and the food was phenomenal. The small plate of sea bass with smoked anchovy, serrano pepper and greens was heaven. Also, the sturgeon dish was perfect, light, and delicious. Leah (the manager, I guess) suggested some incredible red wines (international and more local) and some regional dessert wine as well. What an amazing evening!

BE CAREFUL: The fried chicken was under cooked and made my wife sick causing her to throw up, and a long black hair was cooked into my food. I noticed when it was dangling a piece of oyster off my fork. Talk about gross! I loved this place the first time I went. We had a business meeting and took a vendor out for a nice dinner. All went well so I decided to take my wife out on a spontaneous date. The service was pretty good the second time, our server was pleasant and knowledgeable. The food had good flavor. I ordered the Fried Oysters (with hair cooked into the batter) with a trout entree and a glass of wine. My wife ordered a delicious asparagus appetizer with the(under cooked) fried chicken entree and cocktail. It was an expensive dinner that ended in disappointment and sickness. They comp-ed the oysters, in my opinion the least they could do. As far as my wife's chicken we threw out the leftovers the next morning after she got sick.
