The latest polls continue to confound us all. Romney is doing well in the national vote, yet continues to trail in key state polls. The way to understand this, I think, is to recognize they are measuring different things.
For example, Romney continues to do very well in the South and that ups his national vote total, but it doesn't mean he will carry Ohio where polls show him tied or slightly trailing. Obama will win NY and Ca. but by lower numbers than four years ago so his national vote total will drop and it looks like Romney is on a roll.
An d of course, all of this leads to my second favorite political cliche: The only poll that counts is Election Day (thanks to Joe for reminding me of this one!)
