For the past four years, 16-year-old artist Shania McDonagh has participated in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition, an art contest for children in Ireland held every year since 1955. Just looking at the astounding portrait above, it may come as no surprise that McDonagh has won the top prize

"From the very beginning of her public life, Ann Richards was open about her addiction. Her daughter explained, it was 'not only because she wanted people to know who she was, but because she actually thought it might encourage other folks who were dealing with addiction to get treatment. And they did. I still, today, travel around the country and run into people who say, I got sober because of your mom.'"

Are you going to watch the HBO documentary 'All about Ann'? It sounds like a Smart Girls must-see!

"Across the globe, street art has never been more popular or more relevant. Although the term is often associated with graffiti, it comes in all shapes and forms. A huge amount and variety of these works certainly confirms the fact that the street may be the best of all the creative space."

Street art is closer to people than the best painting or installation shown in a art gallery. Therefore we like it so

"Rena Effendi grew up Baku, Azerbaijan during the economic collapse of the Soviet Union. Walking through the streets of her home town and witnessing its transition was paramount to her development as a photographer."

"For each self-portrait in her series “Daze: Stage of Mind,” the Korean artist Jee Young Lee created an elaborate installation in her studio, in Seoul. The scenes were constructed from everyday materials—plywood, paper cups, straws—and Lee decorated each handmade prop herself. The constructed landscapes are her interpretations of personal experiences, dreams, and Korean folk tales."

What stunning and creative work!

"Here's how it works: Graduates with student loan debt sign up to volunteer at organizations that need manpower. The grads help their community by putting in hours toward that organization's goals. Then donors who have also signed up at SponsorChange reimburse volunteers by paying down their student loans. So the donors help the nonprofit get free manpower rather than making a traditional donation. The volunteers get help with their student loans—and gain useful work experience along the way."

Have you heard about SponsorChange.org?

What are your thoughts on schools have a 'peer jury'? We think it's a pretty brilliant idea!

"It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams."

Colombian novelist and Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez passed away this last Thursday. He left quite a legacy in his wake.
