Greetings NSBE friends and family!
This is Richard Ezike, outgoing Publications and Public Relations Chair for the NSBE DC Chapter. I come to you with a request. I was recently reached out to on the Facebook page by a Ms. Donia Cook, whose son, Kevin Cook-Smith, is a rising senior majoring in mechanical engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. They are currently living in Hagerstown, MD. He recently received an opportunity to do a co-op this summer in Redbank, New Jersey, but he is unable to go because he does not have transportation. The co-op was supposed to pay for his past spring semester’s tuition (since the school does not pay tuition for out-of-state students). He has scholarships from the school but they would not allow him to transfer monies to cover the past semester. The school has not provided any other options for him to pay for the past semester, even after Kevin reached out to it.

If he does not pay for the past semester by July 1, he will have to leave school until he pays, which will likely have to force him to graduate later than his class (assuming he acquires the needed funds for the past spring, which he would have to pay by the end of the year). His mom tried to get a loan with no avail due to that she does not make enough money. They need $6000 for the semester, of which they have raised $2000 through their personal friends and family.

So as you can see, they are in a difficult position. I felt that as a fellow engineer, I needed to do what I can to help Kevin graduate on time so he can walk with his fellow peers and make his mother proud as he walks with his degree next year. Finances should not be a barrier to his success.

Kevin is actively involved in leadership in NSBE, serving as the Region 1 Publications Chair, which covers most of the Northeast. His interests are in sustainable energy, so as you can he see, he is a very intelligent, community-service oriented young man passionate about the NSBE mission.

That is why I am asking for your help. A suggested donation of $20 (or more if you are able) would go a long way to make sure one young man embodies the NSBE mission as being a "culturally responsible Black Engineer that excels academically, succeeds professionally, and positively impacts the community."
I would like to end the campaign by Wednesday, June 28 in order to get the funds to Kevin and Donia in time.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
- Richard

NSBE DC’s own Dr. Richard Ezike will be joined by Dr. Andrew Rosenberg, Director of the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists, to talk about the role of advisory committees - what they are, what they entail, how to be nominated, how they influence policy and regulations, and how you can get involved. The webinar will take place on tomorrow (Tuesday, March 8), from 3 – 4 pm. If interested, please register at http://goo.gl/2bcIql. Learn how you, as a scientist and engineer, can get involved in these committees, which provide valuable information and expertise for policy makers.
