Mapping the stories of cats that sailed the seven seas in the good old days of wooden ships and the very real fear of sea monsters, and falling off the edge of the World. What brave furry critters they were.

This small series of maps aimed to show where all the apartment building action is happening in this part of SE Queensland. They were produced last year in conjunction with vW Maps in Melbourne for a client as part of a printed sales brochure promoting the benefits of living on the Gold Coast.

"Australia, a Big Country"

Just published by Westprint Maps, this new map is a revised combination of a couple of old ones. The illustrations around the edge are from a souvenir map produced years ago, while the main map attempts to show the geographic coverage of the Royal Flying Doctor Service with an overlay of European countries to compare their size and population densities to Australian states.

There's also some great historic photos showing the way the RFDS operated before modern communications and aircraft.

"Burke and Wills Expedition 1860-61"

There would be few Australians who have not heard of the famous duo of Burke and Wills. The Victorian Exploring Expedition from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria was a hugely ambitious undertaking for its time. Many books have been written about the trip, and all the things that went wrong resulting in the deaths of several party members.

John Deckert of Westprint Maps has long been interested in the story and after years of research and many travels across the same country traversed by Burke and Wills, this single map of the whole route showing every overnight camp has been produced.
The screen shots seen here are taken directly from OziExplorer, a mobile mapping app that allows users to navigate on-screen with the digital version of this Westprint map, ideal for following in the footsteps of famous explorers.
