New Mercurial Extension!

Post has attachment
I’d like to introduce the remotenames extension I’ve been working on. It is derived from Augie Fackler’s remotebranches extension. This extension keeps track of remote branches and remote bookmarks. Built on top of the namespaces API in Mercurial, it requires version 3.3 or above.

I wrote this little extension at the +Mercurial 3.2 sprint this weekend. It simply collapses the output of "hg status" so a folder containing only unknown files will show up like "? foo/". Like this:

$ hg init
$ touch foo/x foo/y
$ hg status
? foo/

This is a nice feature +Git has by default and I wanted to see it in Mercurial too. Luckily +Sean Farley had recently added some pre- and post-status hooks for this kind of functionality so it was very easy to make "hg status" so exactly this.

I believe the algorithm is O(n × d) right now where n is the number of files in your working copy and d is the directory depth. I think that could be made much faster by hooking into status earlier and make it abort walking the tree when it sees an unknown directory (something we can detect easily based on the parent manifest). Doing that has been left as an exercise for the reader, however :-)

Good news, everyone!

The Mercurial community is "organizing" a mini-sprint for Friday, March 7th in San Francisco.

Everyone is welcomed to attend! From the curious user to the experienced contributor!

We will be graciously hosted by Atlassian (the company behind Bitbucket.org) at their San Francisco office. We'll be starting in the morning around 9am and sprinting until the evening.
