On our Blog- How Wild Is Wild?
Wild animals are under threat worldwide, from loss of habitat, introduced predators, climate change and human settlement. It looks like it’s not just scientists, though, who are working to protect these populations. The laws of genetics and selection are at work in the animals themselves, helping them to adapt and even thrive in a changing world.
A recent study of wild junglefowl has shown these principles in action. Scientists believe that a series of hurricanes in Hawaii in the 80’s and 90’s blew domestic chickens into the Kauai forests. There, they interbred with wild populations and as a result, these ‘wild’ jungle-dwellers now carry a lot more domestic chicken genes than anyone expected.

It's World Soil Day! Read our blog on Sandy Soils:
Sandy soils: is it best to water plants by drip irrigation?
Growing healthy plants in sandy soils in dry areas is challenging! This includes gardens in coastal areas as well as crop production on light textured soils, not to mention revegetation of desert areas. Hot temperatures and limited water supplies often make the job even harder. It is therefore vital to use precious water resources as efficiently as possible.

Why not try a Straw Bale Vegetable Garden for this weekend's project?

Straw Bale Gardening has been used by gardeners for a long time; and yet many gardeners (both professional and amateur) are not familiar with the technique.

Put simply, it involves planting plants into a straw bale. The straw is open (so roots are drained and aerated), and as it decomposes, it can release nutrients which the plant can use. Being organic material, it is well insulated (so roots don't tend to get too hot, or cold); and it holds moisture well (so the roots have less chance of drying out).
