There are not many books I use anymore, and much fewer from the 70'; but the Garey-Johnson is always there...

This changed my perception of the impact and future impact of software & automation:
* software developer is the most common job in 4 states
* truck driver is the most common job in most states. See the article to why. I understand better the growing concern about unemployment due to automation
* to see why: in 1978, the most common job in most states was secretary. Guess who took all these jobs?

In 2014, in the states of Colorado, Utah, Virginia and Washington, the most common job was software programmer.
The jobs picture has changed profoundly since the 1970s. This map shows how those changes played out across the country.

This is not about science in general, but astronomy in particular. Interesting nevertheless

The numbers of women in astronomy are dismal, but Argentina is an exception. Does the country have something to teach about equality in academia?

Once a [french] media reports about one of our studies I will shamelessly talk about it

Fun read: I am not sure if the sarcasm is the author's or the topic's fault.

"Wow, there’s a lot of life I’m sacrificing to live in this country.” At the time, Argentina’s wet noodle of an economy was foundering. Every day, California Burrito had to readjust prices to keep up with inflation. The conveniences his friends at home took for granted were a far-off dream. “iPhones were like $2,000. We were paying ourselves like $1,200 a month. And I realized that I was missing out on the great luxuries of the American lifestyle.”

[...]

In Silicon Valley, where The Work of creating The Future is sacrosanct, the suggestion that there might be something not entirely normal about this—that it might be a little weird that investors are sinking millions of dollars into a laundry company they had been introduced to over email that doesn’t even do laundry; that maybe you don’t really need engineers to do what is essentially a minor household chore—would be taken as blasphemy. Outside mecca, though, there are still moments of lucidity.

Lately, I wish Google had a feature "why do you see this result" when searching.... ay, the old good days when the search was boolean and only the ranking probabilistic

It happened: an article with the sentence "good old web-search". Although I am not sure what is old or good about it.
Quoc Le wants to create technologies that can take entire sentences, whole paragraphs, and other types of natural language and turn them into numbers---or vectors, the mathematical constructs that computer scientists use to translate the things we see and hear into information that machines can grasp. He’s even exploring how machines can understand things like opinions and emotions.

The Economist printed edition features an article about the "lessons learnt from Argentina’s 100 years of decline". My Argentinian friend are going to celebrate or rage over this article spiced with Madonna's lyric. The article is quite short. Here some quotes:

"The Argentines remain perhaps the best-looking people on the planet."

"its cooking is based on taking the world’s best meat and burning it" (only an English outlet would dare to categorize asado as such)
