Hi All,

I have a quick question I am hoping you can help with. Is there a way in the admin console to change what closing the lids does? I thought that there was but I couldn't find it in device or user management.

I would like to set our chromebooks so that they 'lock' when the lid is closed.

Thank you,

James

Greetings Chicagoland GEG,

For our Google Certified Teacher Action Plan, +David Tess  and I created a basic programming course for middle/high schoolers utilizing Google Apps Script. We’ve offered this training both face-to-face and virtually to educators. We’ve decided it’s time to offer another face-to-face training. This will be open for anyone that wants to learn the basics of scripting with Google Apps (whether or not you will use it in your classroom).

This training will involve two days in March. While the curriculum will usually take teachers a couple months to complete, you get the entire course in two days! No programming experience is necessary (and this may be preferred in some cases!). More details can be found in this linked flyer.

Feel free to share this out to your professional networks. In the past, we’ve had questions about using the materials without attending one of our trainings. While we’re hopeful that we will scale this out at some point in the future, the current iteration of these resources necessitates some type of training/explanation.

We plan these trainings one at a time - we are unsure of when our next one will be, but generally we plan to offer one in the winter and one in the summer.

Have a great day,

James

I made a quick script that you can use to generate QR Codes for all of the files in a Google Drive Folder. It will work for image files, or a native Google Drive Docs. If you try it out please let me know if you have any issues! Make a copy of the linked spreadsheet to try it out.

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is hiring an Instructional Coach. The district serves approximately 5000 PK-8 students. Downers Grove is a west suburb of Chicago and was just ranked as the #2 place in the nation to raise a family. This is a 10 month, teacher contract position. Here is the link to the posting: http://goo.gl/P5ttCp

DG58 is an great place to work. The district is progressive and the leadership is committed to integrating technology the right way, with a focus on curriculum and instruction. While technology skills are important, we feel that strong instructional skills and classroom experience are an essential component for this position.

In terms of hardware, we are an Apple district. Teachers are issued a MacBook Air and next year more than two-thirds of our students will be 1:1 with iPad minis. We are also a Google Apps district. We use Gmail, Drive and Calendar to collaborate among staff and students. This position will work with the myself (the Director of Innovative Technology and Learning) and the Matt Rich (Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction). I am a Google Education Trainer and Google Certified Teacher. Matt is also a Google Certified Teacher. This position will also collaborate with 3 other Instructional Coaches, who have done amazing job supporting our teachers and enhancing learning in our district.

If you want to get a feel for some of the cool things going on in our district check out our district hashtag on Twitter - #dg58learns. If you feel you are qualified I hope you will consider joining us in Downers Grove 58 and contribute to the great work being done here.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

Hey Chicagoland GEG,

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is hosting it's 3rd SAMRi Teacher Camp on July 16. This is a free event, that is organized by our teachers. Check out the sched on the link below to see some of the great sessions being offered!

Hello Chicagoland GEG,

If you have any interest in Learning to Code with Google Apps Script, read on. We have been trying to market this in a few different spots, so I apologize if you have seen this already.

For our Google Certified Teacher Action Plan David Tess and I created a basic programming course for middle/high schoolers. We call it Learn to Code with Google Apps Script. We had our pilot group of teachers attempt this with kids this Spring and we had a good amount of positive feedback (and certainly some suggested improvements as well). We’ve decided it’s time to offer another face-to-face training. This will be open for anyone that wants to learn the basics of scripting with Google Apps (whether or not you will use it in your classroom).

This training will involve two days (July 9 - 10) in Downers Grove. While the curriculum will usually take teachers a couple months to complete, you get the entire course in two days! No programming experience is necessary (and this may be preferred in some cases!). More details can be found in flyer at bit.ly/ltcgas

Have a great day,

James (GTACHI - 13)

Proud of my former Forest Park coworkers!
Another Teacher Thank You goes out to Ms. Peggy Perry and Ms. Cheryl Volpe at Betsy Ross Elementary School, two 1st grade teachers whose contributions to Classroom were instrumental in its development. Happy Teacher Appreciation Week from those of us at Google.   #ThankATeacher

"You blew our minds with the ways you used Classroom and Google Apps with your first graders! We cannot thank you enough for your time and dedication to help us develop, prototype, and pilot Classroom. Your feedback was absolutely instrumental in building a product that will work across all grade levels and subjects. Our team is so impressed with the ways you have incorporated Google Apps for Education into your teaching and your students are incredibly lucky to have such wonderful teachers!"

This week I had to reset passwords for an entire grade, so I put together a simple script that allows you to bulk reset Google passwords. Not a script that has any educational impact but I thought it might be worth sharing none the less.
