Story
Tagline
International editor at the Economist, author of "The New Cold War" (2008) and "Deception (2012)
Introduction
I have spent more than 20 years writing about what is now the ex-communist world. I was deported from the Soviet Union in 1990, arrested several times, and beaten up by the police in Prague on November 17th 1989 at the start of the Velvet Revolution. I speak German well, Russian and Polish adequately, with smatterings of Lithuanian, Czech, and some other languages.

I wrote a book called "The New Cold War" attacking the ex-KGB regime in Russia. It was published in the UK and USA in February 2007, and since then has appeared in more than 15 other languages. I am writing a new book about spies, due for publication in 2012.

I can be contacted via my literary agency Rogers Coleridge and White in London or for speaking engagements via the Leigh Bureau. I can also be reached at The Economist in London

I am the International editor of The Economist and also the central/eastern Europe correspondent; in addition I write about legal stories, especially libel, privacy divorce  and internet law.
