Thanks for this. Looks like Connie has done a wonderful job with writing about her experience. Her observations remind me of this video about the power of empathy: RSA Shorts - The Power of Empathy

It's a short excerpt (illustrated with animals) from Brené Brown's TED talk. Her point is that trying to put a silver lining on someone else's experience or deny that they should be upset (i.e., "well, we all die in the end") is singularly unhelpful. To me, that's about not facing the part of ourselves that is afraid of being in a situation like Connie's. Brown comes to a similar conclusion to yours, Deborah.
