Go, Speed Racer, go

The Got to Be NC Festival featured a BMX exhibition, including a stunt bike riding competition, in which contestants performed balancing moves and jumps, often without relying on a seat, pedals, or handlebars.

Heroes in an eggshell

I've taken to steaming eggs on the weekends instead of hard-boiling them. I put a steamer rack inside a pot, add a bit of water, bring it to a boil, reduce to a simmer, put a couple of eggs on the rack, cover it, and come back 10 minutes later for breakfast.

Only today I forgot the reduce to a simmer step, and this is what emerged.

Deflated

Raleigh had an inaugural balloon festival over the Memorial Day weekend. What they don't tell you about balloon festivals, though, is that it's a sunrise/sunset sport, to take advantage of the relatively calm winds at those times of the day if you've got lots of balloons together in proximity. So despite arriving somewhere slightly before 7:30 am, most of the balloons were being taken down until a scheduled display in the evening.

It wasn't a total loss, though. I did have a nice conversation with one of the crews in the process of packing up, and was amazed at how a seven-story bag holding tens of thousands of cubic feet of air could roll up into a bag maybe a cubic yard in size. We talked a little bit about navigation, which is all about differential altitude winds and a lot of weather reports, and how shaving cream might tell you where you want to go.

Salute

Members of the Capitol City Young Marines salute Major General Cornell Wilson, Jr. at the presentation of a memorial wreath in downtown Raleigh.  Major General Wilson spoke of the duty and service of the members of the armed forces, including Sergeant Rafael Peralta, who gave his final measure of duty by retrieving a thrown grenade and placing it under his body, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers in a close interior firefight. It is those who sacrificed, and those who still yet serve, whom we honor today.

Guard, turn, parry, dodge, spin, thrust

A one-day Renaissance Fair at the +North Carolina Museum of Art featured members of the Windmaster's Hill Barony, the central North Carolina chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Members put on demonstrations of weaving, blacksmithing, painting, and, perhaps most popular of all, combat arts.

Proud Mary keep on burnin'

One of the demonstrations by the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show was competitive log-rolling, in which two performers on a floating simulated log attempt to cause their competitor to lose their footing by any footwork necessary.

He's a lumberjack and he's okay

One of the shows performed for attendees at this weekend's Got to Be NC Festival was the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, which engaged in activities such as axe throwing, log rolling, chainsaw art, and this competition in which two lumberjacks attempted to chop entirely through a log the fastest.
