If your child gets a minor burn, here are a couple of tips on how to handle it. First thing you have to do is cool the burn. Let the pain subside under cool running water to reduce the swelling. Cover it with a bandage, then give your child a pain reliever.

Can you distinguish a minor burn from a serious burn? In a first-degree burn, only the outer layers of the skin are burned. There may be some redness or swelling. For second-degree burns, the first and second layers of the skin are burned. Here, blisters have developed and there is swelling and severe pain. Third-degree burns are the worst—fat, muscle, bone and tissue are affected.
