On this day:
At 14th December of 1987, the first episode of the popular cartoon 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' officially aired.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (earlier known as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in some European countries due to controversy at the time) was an animated television series produced by Murakami-Wolf-Swenson and the French company IDDH.

The pilot was shown during the week of December 14, 1987 in syndication as a five-part miniseries and the show began its official run on October 1, 1988. Since then the show and franchise has become a world-wide phenomenon.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to kids in the late 80s-early 90s were among the most popular cartoons both on syndication and CBS Saturday Morning.

This is the ninja turtles people in the late 80's and early 90's grew up with. This is such a great cartoon because it's not just for kids. There are many quirks and gags that only adults will understand and the humor doesn't get too cheesy or corny for grown-ups nor too suggestive for young kids.

The story lines are excellent. Of course, our favorite fun-loving, pizza eating turtle quartet are the protagonists of the show. Leonardo leads the pack and is the most serious and devoted to his friends of the group.

Donatello is the brains of bunch, he invents many of the gadgets and vehicles the turtles use throuought the series, the most notable of which being the famous Turtle Blimp.

Michealangelo is the party animal who never takes anything seriously, and Raphael is the quick-witted and sharp tounged sarcistic turtle. Their wise master Splinter the half-human, half-rat and fearless reporter April O'Niel often accompany the turtles on their (mis)adventures.

The villains are the most memorable characters of the show and can be just as lovable as the heroes. The Shredder is the powerful main villain who constantly hatches schemes for global domination.
His knuckle headed mutants Rocksteady the rhino and Beebop the warthog are probably the two most lovable villains, because they are so stupid and silly and have so much trying to help Shredder in his quest for global domination, even though they don't realize that they are worthless.

The show helped launch the characters into mainstream popularity and became one of the most popular animated series in television history.

Breakfast cereal, plush toys, and all manner of products featuring the characters appeared on the market during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A successful Archie Comics comic book based on the animated show instead of the original black-and-white comics was published throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Action figures were top-sellers around the world. In 1990, the cartoon series was being shown daily on more than 125 television stations, and the comic books sold 125,000 copies a month.

This show is very much a product of its time and perhaps even captures the zeitgeist of the childhood of a generation. The art is a nice blend of east and west styles (reflecting the culture clash of the tale itself) and is far superior to the rush job that would follow in the next seasons.

Perfectly timed quips and jokes, decidedly serious voice-acting, enough action, fine comics-to-screen satirical translation, a hilarious ending and an energizing and memorable opening theme make this a satisfactory mini-series. Highly recommended...with Turtle Power!!!
