So, like, you guys realize that Google is giving us 10 months to get out of G+. It’s not a given that MeWe is going to be around that long, and when the money is up, they can just power down the servers and that’s that. I’m not going there. I am on Twitter @waynersj and will be moving my gaming conversations there.

So like 99% of people we're all going to be off of G+ sometime soon.

If you want to be in touch with me, what you can do:

1. Send a friend request on Facebook.

2. Follow me on Twitter.

It's weird but c'est la vie. I'd still want to hear from D&D and OSR folks so I'll add you or follow you back. If you don't like either of those, my email is wrossi81 at the Googles.

Is there a fantasy RPG where, given their options, characters would logically stick with spears or polearms in melee until things got hairy, at which point they'd drop the pole weapon and switch to a sword, axe or similar weapon?

I'm thinking of making a new megadungeon. Twist: it's set in the historical Earth, during the Hellenistic Age (this is part Fritz Leiber's fault and part Ken Hite's), in the Near East, specifically in the Seleucid Empire during the 200s or 100s BC.

The dungeon would be under an ancient ruined temple that has, through magic symbolism, weakened the boundaries between worlds. By "worlds" I don't mean some infinitely distant cosmic place; I am talking about Earth and the Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto.

So - any thoughts on sources of inspiration or theft? I have ideas on the planet side that should be pretty obvious if you pay attention to what I read (ER Burroughs, HP Lovecraft, HG Wells, and people inspired by them) but less on Babylonian-derived fantasy stuff. Persian, Greek, etc are also good.

I’ve wanted for a while to pick up the Ace paperbacks of The Lord of the Rings as a piece of historical interest. Aside from the cover art, which is wonderful, these are the unauthorized 1965 editions that spurred Tolkien’s novel from relative obscurity to mass success. The Ballantine editions of 1966 were only released because Ace had defied Tolkien’s wishes and used a loophole in international copyright law to produce these “pirate” editions. A lot of Appendix N was popular in the 1960s and 70s because of Lin Carter’s Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, which wouldn’t have existed if Tolkien had never been forced into mass market paperbacks.
