- Pecos Valley Medical CenterDiabetes Educator, present
I’m a type 1 diabetic, diabetes clinical educator, author, and columnist. I run the diabetes program for a northern New Mexico non-profit clinic. I’ve penned four books on diabetes: The Born-Again Diabetic: The handbook to help you get your diabetes in control (again); Taming the Tiger: Your first year with Diabetes—also in Spanish as Domar al Tigre: Tu primer año con Diabetes; Beyond Fingersticks: The art of control with continuous glucose monitoring; and Diabetes Warrior: Be your own knight in shining armor. Not to brag, but this does seem to be the place to do it, collectively, these four books have won 16 regional, national and international book awards. Am I done with books? Not hardly. I’m hard at work on So you love someone with diabetes? a handbook for type 3s (those poor folks without diabetes who love us), and The Diabetes Vaccine, a book on preventing type 2 and why we, as a society, fail to do so. I pen a weekly advice column for Diabetes Mine and am one of the Expert Columnists at dLife. You’ll also find me in assorted magazines and other diabetes websites. But, wait! That’s not all! Being a certified work-a-holic, I’m also a part-time community faculty member for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where my role is in training community health workers to become part of diabetes care teams. I’ll get some rest when I’m dead.
