No one likes red tape but there are situations where effective record keeping is essential – school safeguarding is one of them and an area closely monitored by Ofsted. For example, an Essex school was recently downgraded from Outstanding to Inadequate, largely over concerns about poor record keeping:

The Demise of the Duvet Day
Recently released Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show the average number of working days lost for sickness in 2016 fell to its lowest level since the data record began.
Some industry commentators say the figures reflect a trend of people increasingly coming into work when unwell, prompting TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady to say that it was a myth that workers frequently throw sickies. “We are really a nation of mucus troopers, with people more likely to go to work when ill than stay at home when well,” she said. http://ow.ly/PO1z30bLcnA #healthandsafety #sickie

RoSPA are clear about the benefits of a school trip. As well as being a break from the school routine, school visits enable pupils to learn new skills and develop positive attitudes. Despite this, many teachers fear the consequences of an injury to a child during a school trip – including the possibility of civil litigation and criminal prosecution for health and safety offences.

The DfE Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits Handbook is packed with practical information and advice for group leaders organising an educational visit. Child Wristbands are a simple, tool which can help address a number of recommendations made in the handbook. http://ow.ly/JZIm30bbjRr

The Ladder of Success
Today there is a whole range of equipment available to work safely from height - MEWPS, scissor lifts, podiums, cherry pickers and scaffolding, all of which have their uses. But let's hear it for the humble ladder, after all ladders have been in use for hundreds of years. We don’t climb the scaffold of success and Jacob didn't ascend to heaven on a MEWP. http://ow.ly/WMQK30axYtb #laddersafety
