Behind the Scenes Making of the "Life's Work" Series

For tonight's program of special big screen viewing of the Life's Work : Conversations with Makers series (in Halifax, Nova Scotia) Breakwater Studios has produced a short behind the scenes featurette. I am looking forward to seeing the series on the big screen and meeting up with the film maker and other craftspeople tonight.

Enjoy this short film.

Turned Boxes Collection is now Featured by Google!

I just got notified that this collection of my turned wood boxes is now part of the Google+ Featured collections. Very exciting news! If you are already a follower of mine you will see the postings anyway, but you can choose to be notified of new postings to the collection. And anyone who wants to can follow it simply as a collection, without following me.

Many thanks to the Google staff who recommended it.

Social media’s a lot of fun (celebrity tweets, Candy Crush or cat pictures—pick your own vice; I’ll take cat pics). But it’s not all fun and games. It’s a nifty marketing tool, too. But be that as it may, a brand’s pure existence on social media won’t drive the organic traffic mandatory for a strong web presence (and reaching level 600 on Candy Crush is virtually worthless in this pursuit).

New Perspective on a Galaxy Cluster | NASA Chandra
In this image, bright jets bursting in blue circle with pink at top center and bottom center against deep space. | Oct. 21, 2015: The galaxy cluster MS 0735.6+7421 is home to one of the most powerful eruptions ever observed. X-rays detected by NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory (blue) show the hot gas that comprises much of the mass of this enormous object. Within the Chandra data, holes, or cavities, can be seen. These cavities were created by an outburst from a supermassive black hole at the center of the cluster, which ejected the enormous jets detected in radio waves (pink) detected by the Very Large Array. These data have been combined with optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope of galaxies in the cluster and stars in the field of view (orange).

This image is part of a collection of new images released from the Chandra archive to celebrate American Archive Month. Archives, in their many forms, save information from today that people will want to access and study in the future. This is a critical function of all archives, but it is especially important when it comes to storing data from today's modern telescopes. Chandra has collected data for over sixteen years on thousands of different objects throughout the universe. Once the data is processed, all of the data goes into an archive and is available to the public.

Video Produced by Canadian Woodworking Magazine

In the current issue of Canadian Woodworking Magazine +Canadian Woodworking there is an article "Canadian Quotes" about me and my work, here, http://digital.canadianwoodworking.com/Vizion5/viewer.aspx?shareKey=ER16H8
You should be able to read that article as a sample if you want.
They built the attached slideshow using my and Ellie's photographs and my thoughts from the article. I think they did a great job of it.
As well there is an article I wrote for them entitled "Turn a Simple Box". If you pick up a copy of the magazine or buy a digital copy you can see all the articles, but some are available to read as samples.

Dynamic Sunset at the River (Montreal)

Check how photo looked straight from the camera, how it was taken and processed
----> http://www.phototraces.com/deconstructing-photo/last-minute-sunset-at-the-river-montreal/

HDR Processed: Lightroom, Photomatix, Photoshop
Bracketing: 9 shots (-4, -3,  -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, +4 )

It was another day with absolutely unpredictable weather in Montreal. I went to my favorite spot in the city for the sunsets without much hope of getting any light at all. For the entire afternoon the sun was completely covered with the thick and dark clouds.

Just before the sun was ready to submerge under the horizon the small opening appeared, letting sun out of the clouds. The sunset lasted 3-5 minutes at most but it was enough for me to take a few interesting shots.

The light was extremely dynamic. I was shooting directly into the sun but at the same time I had spots of very dark shadows around me. To make sure I cover entire range of light I took 9 bracketed shots from -4EV to+4EV. Later, I used only 7 exposures to tone map HDR image; +3 and +4 exposures were way too bright and unusable.
