This editorial cartoon is so horrifically poignant that it literally gives me chills to look at.

(For those that don't know, my wife, Ceallaigh, is working on her PhD in Folklore at present; with that in mind:)

(... while driving home, I gesture at the trailer in front of us with a bundle lashed to the drop-down tailgate thingy:)

Sean: What do you suppose that is?

Ceallaigh: A grandma.

Sean: Oh - like in that Chevy Chase "vacation" movie?

Ceallaigh: No - that's an actual legend!

Sean: It is?! What's the legend?

Ceallaigh: Oh, you know - there's a grandma. She dies. Usually on a road trip. The family wraps her up in a tarp. They drive her body home.

Sean: ... OK - that's the problem with higher-level folklorists -- they quit remembering the actual story, and start just rattling off the ingredients; e.g. "take a grandma, add a death and tarp, maybe a dash of oregano, and BOOM: that's the 'granny died' legend."

PAYBACK FOR THIEVING EVIL SCAMMERS:

So - I just got one of those calls from the "IT Department" about the "software they installed last year for me" reporting a "virus" on my computer. They've changed up their tactics, and now instead of being there to give me the "bad news" about my "computer infection", they're instead playing a recording that gives me a number to call back.

For those that are unaware, the scam is that they get you to visit a page, then click accept on your screen, which infects your computer with their trojan viruses so they can steal your data and either impersonate you, or encrypt your drive and hold it for ransom, or any other bits of nastiness.

So I called them back.

The first time I over-played it with histrionics over my "fear" of the "virus" they called me about, and they hung up.

The second time I played it cool. He asked if I was in front of my computer, and I said I was. He asked if it was turned on, and I said it wasn't, and that I'd turned it off because of the warning in their message. He asked me to turn it on, but I hesitated, wanting to know if the "virus" would hurt my computer if I did that. He said he's stop it from hurting, and I said "oh good!", and then asked how he'd do that. He said don't worry about it, and that it wouldn't hurt my computer much. I replied that this means it will hurt my computer some, so maybe I should leave the computer off. He hung up.

The third time went the same as the first up to me asking how he'd stop the virus from hurting my computer. He said it won't hurt my computer, so I asked why I needed them if the virus wasn't going to hurt anything. He called me "dumb" and hung up.

I'll be calling them some more when I get done with work today. I think they're lonely... aaand I figure the more time they waste with me means they have less time to actually scam someone that falls for their nonsense.

If you would like to join in on the fun, they can be reached at:

What are YOU reading?

I just finished enjoying the (unabridged) Audible.com version of The Hum and the Shiver, and I'm blown over. I was hooked in the opening scene, I was figuratively gripping the edge of my seat through the story, and now I'm hooked on the set (and have just bought the rest of the series). Alex Bledsoe's characters are so believable that I found myself identifying deeply with several of them, and their story arcs are engaging and poignant. The weaving in of the surreal elements is seamless, leaving me feeling as though he's describing a reality I just hadn't yet bothered to consider. My only regret is that I have but five stars to give on my review:

This has crossed my feed a few times over the last couple of years, and every time I watch it I think that it's a point well made.

OK, Hive Mind: I need a categorizing browser link tracking solution.

I need to be able to save links for things like "later entertainment viewing" or "needs reply" or "check on and report status", etc. I also need to be able to rapidly add/remove categorized reference links; e.g. links for a particular client project, links for social media, etc.

I'd like for this solution to be browser agnostic and cloud based.

Any suggestions, oh brainy web-users?

A year ago today, Ceallaigh and I were in Iceland on our second trip there, and it's one I'll never forget. If you can make it out there, I highly recommend it. And if your interest is piqued, here's a video log of our first trip out, where we travelled all the way around the ring road:
