This isn't one of them high-falutin' hipster or yuppie museums, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your point of view. The permanent collection is interesting, but face facts: a museum has to be pretty spectacular to compete with the Met, the Frick, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, MOMA, etc. It's the temporary exhibits that make visiting worthwhile, with recent shows focusing on everyone from Jean Paul Gaultier to Gilbert and George. The Family-Friendliness knob turns up to 11 the first Saturday of every month, with free admission and movie screenings, live entertainment, dancing, etc.

A great place to visit in Brooklyn. They have great temporary exhibits and good permanent exhibits as well, such as their Ancient Egyptian art and African Art. The museum is beautiful. Each Saturday night, admission is free (except for some special exhibits) and there are special musical performances, hands-on art activities, and lectures. There is also a cafe on the ground level that offers a wide assortment of food and beverages. If you do come on a Saturday night, be mindful that it can get really crowded, especially the first floor where all the music performances are.

This museum gets better and better. I recommend going the first Saturday of the month. They will have lots of events such as live music and activities. A new restaurant just opened up inside also. At 8 pm people line up in the 3rd floor open area to listen and dance to music.

This museum has helped build the cred of Brooklyn long before the Barclay's Center was a concept. Over the past 20 years I have made the trek with family and friends to see all sorts of eclectic exhibits. The Star Wars visiting show was one great highlight - saw that one 3 times with different friends and the young kids. Their permanent galleries have great art - the Art of the Americas is my favorite. I make this a must stop over the holidays - a day of art and relaxation.

A great museum in the heart of Brooklyn. Many different pieces of art (paintings and sculptures), including international and acclaimed artists. They have free first Saturdays every month, which includes free admission to concerts, talks, performances and the art exhibits. Very close to the subways.

I love their temporary exhibition (Jean Paul Gaultier, Mickalene Thomas) and their parties on every first Saturday of the month. It is close to Prospect park, the botanical garden and the bars/shops on 5th and 7th av so you spend the whole day there.
