Yay!  I used my binoculars to see this comet tonight.

Pan-STARRS!

I have a few of my favorite pix of comet Pan-STARRS up on the blog, and links to how you can see it yourself. It's naked-eye visible now (barely) but binoculars are your best bet.

And I was able to show it to my family tonight.  It's hard to see because it is so low in the western sky.

Love the way the moon moves from right to left because if was filmed in the southern hemisphere.

Moonrise over New Zealand two days ago, shot by Mark Gee.  What a sight!

Robert, here is the youtube link. The author describes how this was shot and gives info on the music (which I have if you want it.)

I wondered how Curiosity compared to Viking and found this. Nice post +Emily Lakdawalla!  I wonder how much many bytes Viking sent back vs how many we are expecting from Curiosity.  Any idea?

Curiosity can use x band to talk directly to earth. 160 to 12000 bits per second. Very low. It can use UHF to talk to orbiter and it's 128000 bits per second that way (that's about 16 kilobytes per second).

Viking used s band and I think got 250 bits per second direct and 16000 bits per second UHF (2 kilobytes per second).

Both x and s bands are microwave.

Okay Google.  That little red square that tells me when I have a notification is stuck on 1.  Is this a bug or a feature?

KSP is a fun program. I should play it again when I get the chance.

We have milkweed in the flower garden.  It now has no leaves.  This little guy left just a single stem.
