For a variety of reasons, this is not great news for Apple which has until recently, been able to compete with a premium-priced product.  To be sure, the company is sitting on a mountain of cash, but Wall Street wants signs of sales growth, and with the iPad Mini considered by consumers as overpriced and hints suggesting relatively slow sales so far, many are wondering whether the great times at Apple might look a but different in coming years.  There were hints that sales figures from carriers such as Verizon Wireless, and AT&T suggested iPhone 4s were outselling iPhone 5 because of the lower cost, and reduced subsidies from the carriers.  Then, in January 2013, a Piper Jaffray analyst named Gene Munster suggested Apple might consider introducing a lower-cost iPhone to compete in the global mobile phone market representing as many as 580 million customers, but Apple quickly dismissed the question when interviewed by a Chinese newspaper.

Personally, it doesn't make much difference to me, but Leap Wireless was a test case to see how well iPhone sells without big carrier subsidies.  Like many,  find the Samsung Galaxy IIIs more appealing because of its bigger screen (Retina display? Who cares?).  But the low-end of the mobile market is where most of the growth is happening in the U.S., not the high-end, a market Apple indicates it doesn't intend to compete in.  Apple mobile phones aren't really big sellers in many developing markets.
Leap Wireless, which operates the prepaid Cricket service, said it is struggling to sell as many iPhones as it committed to sell during the first year of its contract with Apple.

The first of a two-part radio show ("Freakonomics Radio") hosted by Freakonomics co-author Stephen J. Drubner. This episode talks about how American food got so bad, how it’s begun to get much better in recent years, and who has the answers for further improvement. Worth a listen, or you can download the podcast on iTunes and listen on your commute to/from work!

This was one of the dumbest predictions, and NPR has conveniently shot holes through that predictions.
