Dear Google users—

You may be aware of press reports alleging that Internet companies have joined a secret U.S. government program called PRISM to give the National Security Agency direct access to our servers. As Google’s CEO and Chief Legal Officer, we wanted you to have the facts.

First, we have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday.

Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. Press reports that suggest that Google is providing open-ended access to our users’ data are false, period. Until this week’s reports, we had never heard of the broad type of order that Verizon received—an order that appears to have required them to hand over millions of users’ call records. We were very surprised to learn that such broad orders exist. Any suggestion that Google is disclosing information about our users’ Internet activity on such a scale is completely false.

Finally, this episode confirms what we have long believed—there needs to be a more transparent approach. Google has worked hard, within the confines of the current laws, to be open about the data requests we receive. We post this information on our Transparency Report whenever possible. We were the first company to do this. And, of course, we understand that the U.S. and other governments need to take action to protect their citizens’ safety—including sometimes by using surveillance. But the level of secrecy around the current legal procedures undermines the freedoms we all cherish.

On Sunday, March, 23rd, 2014 one of my very dear friends Rosa and her family lost everything in house fire, including 2 cars and their beloved 2 cats. So I was hoping at pulling your heart strings for help. My friend Rosa actually ran back into the burning house to find her 2 dogs.
She found the pitbull on the 2nd floor in the corner of her bedroom hiding but could not find her Chihuahua he is still missing we think he ran off. As days passed neighbors told Rosa they saw the little dog, however he runs off when they approach.
The only thing that was left from the fire were pieces of photos that is it. I'm reaching out to people that I've had contact with to help us raise money.
We are throwing a Beef and Beer on May 3rd to help raise money so I thought I would ask you if you would donate something  that we can raffle off. I don't know if I'm being too forward or not but I am heartbroken for the families’ loss.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me, I know the name would raise a lot of money especially if we have something spectacular to raffle.
I have added my home address if you just want to go ahead and send us something. Please let me know your thoughts and please keep my friends in your prayers.
Thank you

There are almost 22 million military veterans in the United States today and millions more around the world. Google has created some new tools to help these vets - and their families - find new ways of connecting online. In honor of Veteran's Day, we've just announced a new YouTube channel, Vet Connect page, and a resume builder powered by Google Docs.

My father was a Tuskegee Airman and a veteran of WWII and Vietnam, so it's important to me that Google supports veterans; I'm proud of the work we're doing on this front.

Check out: http://www.googleforveterans.com/
From our veteran community to yours. This site was made by some veterans, family of veterans and friends who work at Google. We understand the challenges of serving, coming home and transitioning to c...

Great when you openly support great causes. How about the times when you callously disrupt a Google customers life.

Read this. Happened today. Was legal of any help? No, Google employees claimed not to how how to reach them

Just got off a several calls totaling over 2 hours with your Google Wallet Division aftera transaction was declined today. After being required to send in proof of id and residence, which I did, and after using Google Wallet now for months. Google has closed my account and says they will get the balance of my funds to me in 30 days.

One: No reason was given for closing the account.

Two: If Google is arbitrarily closing Wallet accounts and holding customers balances for 30 days they are committing fraud. No where in Google Terms of Agreement does Google state they will keep your money. The money should be immediately returned to the source of funding.
...

Three: basically stealing a persons money for 30 days can and will have unlimited repercussions. If Google is holding money that is meant for bills, grocery shopping, paying the rent, gas for a car then they are directly responsible for any negative actions, including but not limited to. late fees, the inability of family or children to get to a urgent medical appointment or pick up critical prescriptions, possible eviction procceddings being taken, being unable to buy food and the basic necssities and who knows how many other problems.
...

Trust me, I am legally holding Google responsible for everything that happens as a result of this action. I was not committing any crimes or doing anything even close to resembling improper. When asked what terms I had violated I was told that I would not be told. Which says to me that Google is doing something that is probably illegal and doesn't want to admit to something they can end up in court over. God knows Google already has enough problems with anti-trust laws.
...

So as soon as I start racking up late fees, cancelled auto. house and health insurance policies because they're unpaid, missing doctors appointment because I have no gas in the car to get there, missed medication I can't pay the copay for (I am HIV positive and if I miss even one day of my medications, it would be very detrimental to my health and physical well-being and could even lead to prolonged death) and anything else that comes of Google's theft of my money.

Once all this has passed I'm pretty sure there isn't a jury in the world and especially those in in California that would not find Google Inc guilty of causing serious physical, emotional and mental harm to any plaintiff suing Google in these or similar circumstances.

Mr Drummond, my first call was to my lawyer. My following calls will be to every major newspaper in the country..
...

There's nothing worse than a company that treats it's customer so poorly. I'm sure there will be many others treated in a similar fashion by Google and I hope will step forward to take action against Google. I will welcome them with open arms. If this case draws out past my demise, and you know Google will do everything they can so it will, I intend to leave a will instructing my family and lawyers to continue with the case and under no circumstances to accept any blood money for a quiet settlement. Google will have to make changes and make them legally and permanently.

I've come to Berlin a number of times and I've always been really impressed by two of the great German traditions - outstanding technological innovation and cutting-edge academic debate. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to help launch the new Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society. It's going to research opportunities - and the challenges - that the internet offers society. I think it could make a big contribution to the debate not just here in Germany but beyond too.

The Institute is the result of work by Google and four of Germany's leading universities and research centres - Humboldt University of Berlin, Berlin University of the Arts, the Social Science Research Center Berlin, and the Hans-Bredow-Institute in Hamburg. I hope there will be many more partners in the future.
Thanks to everyone involved - it was great to be at the start of something so exciting and good luck to the incredible team that will take the Institute forward. I can't wait to come back!

Here are my remarks at the launch event:
