I had set this one aside for a bit because of a difficult to diagnose problem. It's back to testing again after an extra aggressive cleaning of the upper balance jewels.

Getting the timing close required removing four timing washers from the balance wheel that didn't belong there.

This is something I see a lot of. The top of the pallet bridge has been unfortunately filed down, including the screw head, leaving ugly scratch marks and destroying the original finish. This gets done to thin the parts slightly, rather than fix the real problem - that the balance wheel was out of flat and scraping on the pallet bridge.

This next one is an example of Elgin's grade 300, made about 1905.

This was a watch serviced in 2015. It came back to me after an unfortunate impact. Luckily, nothing was broken. The mainspring cap popped up and unseated though and interfered with the balance wheel. Also, the mainspring unhooked and the safety pinion engaged to protect the train. It's running again now, and will go through an extra long testing period.
