These pictures show how the sleeve screws into the neck of the case. There is a special wrench to do this, which I have pictured before. By turning the sleeve in and out, the depth of the stem in winding and setting can be adjusted, although the depth difference between winding and setting can not.

I fixed the crown problem by finding a new stem with stronger threads that also happened to be just a little longer at the crown end. This allows me to use a replacement crown that doesn't have such a long inner tube. It doesn't need to go on as far because the stem sticks out more. Everything works now!

I don't like having to fix issues like this with cases. These parts are all getting much harder to find. And you really need a bin full of each one to be able to find something that will work. They're all different.

Although the movement ran well, the watch would not wind or set. This was actually a case problem. On most vintage American watches the snap in/out function of the crown is something the case does, not the watch. Here are the pieces in the neck of the case that make that happen. There is the sleeve with spring fingers that move over a shoulder in the stem. The crown threads onto the stem.

On this watch there are two problems. One, the fingers of the sleeve are broken. This is a common problem (file under "there's a reason they don't make them like this anymore). I have a replacement pictured here. Second, and more importantly (since the movement is lever set), the threads in the crown are completely stripped out. It was glued onto the stem.

The problem for me is that I couldn't find a good replacement for this crown. If you look inside it, the tube with the threads inside extends out quite a bit. Most crowns need to sit lower, covering the neck of the case.

"We are proud to have exposed this massive fraud on consumers, which has unjustly enriched CenturyLink to the tune of billions of dollars nationwide," said Ben Meiselas, the attorney with Geragos & Geragos who represents plaintiffs in those cases and is seeking to have them treated as a class. "We applaud Attorney General Swanson and call on all Attorney Generals across the nation to protect its consumers against CenturyLink."
