October Birthstone: Opal

Opal takes its name from the Latin word Upala meaning precious stone.

For every birthstone there are: Modern, Traditional, Contemporary, Mystical, Ancient, Zodiac and Star signs. One of the modern birthstones for October is the Opal, also the accepted gem for the “13th Wedding Anniversary”. Most opals are about 50-65 million years old.

Opals are formed as silica mixed with ground water, through time then forms as silica gel which collected and hardened in the underground fissures and cavities. On the surface of opals you will see iridescent flashes of color; green, blue, aqua and sometimes yellowish or red colors which are referred to as "fire". This phenomenon is caused by light diffusion that occurs when you move the stone; when light splits or diffracts on the stones surface.

DIFFERENT VARIETIES AND COLORS:
The most rare and valuable opal is the Black Opal. Very fine quality black opals often cost more per carat than diamonds. The locations where black opals are found are in the Lightning Ridge region of Northern New South Wales. The black opal is really not black but has dark base which enhances the brilliant colors known as "fire". In an area between the New South Wales border and northwest Queensland you can find boulder opal which forms on a dark ironstone base (the host rock). There are about 10 specific groups of boulder opals.
Light opal is the most common variety and type of opal found and refers to both the crystal type opal which is translucent and the milky opal that is opaque. Some precious gem quality light opals can exceed the value of some Black and Boulder opals. Brilliantly colored light opals may be quite expensive. The brilliance or luster can be the primary factors that determine an opal's value as well as the strong intensity and color play.

For care of opal stones, it's very important to avoid damage or crazing that may occur when kept in an extremely hot and dry environment. Opal's hardness on the Mohs scale is 6.5.
