Charles Birnbaum

An artist for 25 years, Charles Birnbaum studied ceramics at the Kansas City Art Institute with Ken Ferguson, and after receiving a BFA, he did his graduate work at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Over the next two decades, despite working-full time in business, he continued developing his unique vision and the exquisite craftsmanship that makes his art so extraordinary. In 2004, he quit his job as a bond trader to become a full-time artist.

Magnificent modern ruins!

The Babcock Building at South Carolina State Hospital is an interesting structure. Resembling a Kirkbride building in its footprint, it was actually constructed in disparate sections over a 40 year period; the grand administrative pavilion was among the last sections built. During the period of its construction, the Civil War took place. In one of the older sections, pictured here, a mostly-unrenovated attic is home to a rocking chair, as well as various other artifacts scattered throughout the building. When the Babcock Building was depurposed, its salvage was incomplete - some sections were stripped bare, while others - such as a thrift store a few wards over - are still full of artifacts. Through the tunnel system in the basement, a hair salon is reachable. Meanwhile, surrounding the building, the majority of the State Hospital is quite active, going about the business of caring for the mentally ill of South Carolina, oblivious to the beautiful, historic structure silently decaying in the center of the campus.
