Our modern work culture places a strong emphasis on our roles and achievements. It is easy to get over-identified with what we do. We become our title and our function and lose connection with a deeper and truer sense of our presence and worth. However seductive it may be to identify with our work and our roles, it is most empowering to hold them lightly. If we get lost and caught up we become less creative and resilient and often lose connection with the true priorities in our life.

This week’s Awake at Work micropractice “Beyond the Role” sets you free from the prison of your identity and the constriction of your role. It invites you to take a step back and reconnect with a deeper, truer and more enduring sense of who you are. When we live and work from the place of self-presence our actions, communications and relationships take on a new aliveness, integrity and power.

Often a person's identity, that wild inner complexity of soul and color of spirit, becomes shrunken into their work identity. They become prisoners of their role. They limit and reduce their lives. They become seduced by the practice of self-absence. They move further and further away from their own lives.

— John O’Donohue

Reflection

What happens when you feel constricted by your role or the identity you’ve created? What happens when you connect with what’s beyond that -- your inner presence and true nature?

“Pain is not wrong. Reacting to pain as wrong initiates the trance of unworthiness. The moment we believe something is wrong, our world shrinks and we lose ourselves in the effort to combat the pain.”

When we begin to slow down, we quickly bump up against the conditioning tells us that we’re lazy or unproductive or not valuable or doomed to be a “failure” if we don’t keep generating external achievement. ~ Joshua Levin

Three seemingly simple questions create a powerful alchemy when contemplated. A homeopathy for your genius soul...we call this the
Awake at Work Genius Rx!

What genius is seeking to emerge from within you?
What's in the way?
What radical change experience would create a breakthrough?

Imbibe these questions, let them roll around in your soul, dive deep and listen below the surface chatter...what do you see, sense, hear, know? How does genius move you?
